Charles Edward Brooks

Charles Edward Brooks departed this life after a brief illness on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 in his home. Born to the late George and Lillie Brooks of Brunswick County, Virginia on June 8, 1927. He was educated in the Lawrenceville County Public School System. At a young age Charles became and still is a member of the Johnson Grove A.M.E. church in Lawrence, VA. Charles enlisted in the United States Army were he served his country from 1944 to 1946 as a field engineer. After that time he worked as a civilian at the Fort George E. Meade Army Base, in Ft. Meade, MD until his retirement in 1975.In 1948 he met his beloved Bernice Marie Thomas and two years later on December 22, 1950 they were married. No children were born to this union but his love for children was bestowed on his many nieces, nephews and neighbor kids. Even though Charles was not a member of any church in Baltimore, MD he stayed very close to his roots. You will often find Charles visiting many churches in the Baltimore area and also always driving Bernice and her friends to church whenever needed.Charles was so well loved by his family and friends that his presence is going to be greatly missed and irreplaceable. His outgoing personality is a memory that we all will cherish and hold onto during this time. He always had a story to tell and it was ended with a laugh. Fishing was one of his favorite pass time in life; he loved and enjoyed sharing this pass time with family and friends and even by himself. Charles had a special relationship with the managers and patrons at Cajun Blue Restaurant here in Baltimore, MD so much so that he was affectionately know to tem as “The General” and to others he was affectionately known as “Brooks”.Charles had (4) brothers that preceded him in death; George Albert, Lonnie, Theodore and Louis and one sister, Mary Brooks. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 52 years; Bernice Marie Brooks. Charles remaining siblings are: Herbert Brooks (Susie), Philadelphia, PA, Hattie Squire, New York, NY, Addie Brown (Charles, Sr.), Woodbridge, VA, and Emma Hannah, Baltimore, MD. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
