Carrie L. Hicks

Carrie Louise Hicks was born to the late James Virgil Gardner and Willie Mae Gardner on August 26, 1926 in Littleton, N.C. She departed this life on December 13, 2015. She was married to the late Stevenson Hicks and they had two daughters Bernice and Lillian (Lillian preceded her in death in December 2014). Carrie attended school in Wareen County, North Carolina and was a member of the Pleasant Zion Baptist Church. She left North Carolina to live in Jamaica New York, where she became a member of the Merrick Park Baptist Church under the late reverend Curtis Norton, with her children and many of her family members. In her early years she worked hard cleaning houses to provide a living for her two daughters and made sure they had the best of everything. Carrie moved to Harlem, New York on 163rd Street where she lived for over 40 years and made a wealth of friends amongst her neighbors and the community. Her oldest granddaughter Pamela came to live with her and Lillian (Sis) at the age of 13 years old and they made sure that she always had the very best of everything as well. Many of children (who are now grown) in the neighborhood still ask about her and remember her short time and washed her family's clothes weekly. Prior to that she worked in the health department and as a school crossing guard (police Department) for many years. Carrie became ill and moved from Harlem to Baltimore, Maryland where her daughters would have the ability to care for her and family would be able to visit. She was cared for until her passing by her only surviving daughter Bernice. Carrie was preceded in death by her father James Virgil Gardner, mother Willie Mae Gardner, husband Stevenson Hicks, her brothers James and William Gardner, her sisters Alice and Bertha Gardner and her daughter Lillian (Sis). She leaves to cherish her legacy, daughter Bernice (Baltimore), her grandchildren Pamela (New Jersey) Darlene (Baltimore) and Darrell (Baltimore). Her great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Heather, Justin, Daniel Sean, Charlea, Danai, and Vanessa and her great great grandchildren Alize, Lloyd, Caiden and Troi Madison and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many more relatives.
