Cammie Vernell Dailey

Cammie Vernell Dailey, lovingly known to many as Nell, was born and raised in Hanover County, VA to Delma and Beatrice Pryor. She attended school there and graduated from John M. Gandy High School. She really enjoyed her high school years, often recounting humorous stories to her grandchildren. Cammie was a very good at keeping up with old high school friends, and would spend hours on the telephone with them as they re-lived those fun years. After high school Cammie moved to Chicago, Illinois where she experienced life in the big city working for a major retail company. That experience set the foundation for her snazzy sense of style, which she maintained, thoughtout her life. Later she was blessed with two daughters, Marsha and Sharon, on whom she lavished her love and affection. She was deeply grieved by the passing of her daughter Sharon, but happily transferred that love to her precious grandchildren, Casey and Alexandria. She spent many happy and fun years being their babysitter, playmate, confidant, cheerleader and Number 1 Gran. They listened to the Jackson Five Christmas album all year long, and she taught them how to sing “Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens.” Cammie established lasting friendships while working at Philip Morris, and made a groundbreaking impression in her role as the first African American working in the Human Resources Department there. She joined Bethany Baptist Church at an early age. And even though she had moved from Montpelier, she maintained her connection with the family church throughout her life. She later joined Second Baptist Church where she claimed her seat on the balcony. Cammie Vernell Pryor Dailey departed this life April 11, 2016. She was preceded in death by daughter, Sharon Dailey;parents,Beatrice and Delma Pryor; sister Nora Pryor;brothers,Rudy,Paul and Joseph Pryor; beloved son-in law, Bernard Vandervall. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving and devoted daughter, Marsha Vandervall; two grandchildren, Casey and Alexandria Vandervall; two sisters, Nancy Winston and Mamie Johnson; and a host of other relatives and friends, including special friends, James Davis, Daniel Jenkins and Thelma Hill.
