Calvin Davis

Calvin Davis was born February 15, 1926 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He was the eldest son of the late Blanche and John Davis. His only sibling is his brother, John Davis. Calvin grew up in Columbia, S.C. and attended Booker T. Washington High School before joining the United States Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Lejeune, N.C. and honorably served overseas in the Korean War. He lived most of his adult life in New York City. Calvin was streetwise, book smart, and often sought for his sage advice. He earned an Associate Degree in Arts from New York City Community College and completed tax preparation courses at Pace University. Calvin was a “jack of all trades” and a master of most. He was a golden glove boxer, tailor, insurance broker, U.S. Postal worker, and tax preparer for the IRS. As a tailor, he learned a valuable lesson while making a suit for his grandmother – “don’t forget the without a corset on measurement”. Calvin was a man who loved life, lived his life, and loved the life he lived! He loved to entertain and be entertained. He was an avid card player, challenging chess player, gracious host, and skilled chef. Friends and family members raved about his mouth-watering ribs, savory spaghetti, “special” black-eyed peas, and barbeque pig feet. Calvin was an alpha male, a man’s man, and a man who stood out in a crowd. He had a gift of gab, always spoke his mind, and always played to win. He was a member of the Club 36 card club in Petersburg, VA., a volunteer tax preparer for AARP members, and chess instructor for youth. After a debilitating stroke, he was confined to the Tyler Retreat Nursing Home in Chester, VA. On March 31, 2011, he left this phase of living. Our beloved Calvin leaves to continue his legacy of living – a devoted wife, Gloria Williams-Davis; four daughters, Pamela Davis Queen (Gregory), Pecolia Davis, Nicole Davis Wright (Jermaine), and Debra Medina (George); two sons, Calvin Guy Davis and Donald Michael Williams (Erica); seven grandchildren, Ronald B. Smalls, Jr.; Tatiana, Makayla, and Jermaine Wright; Dillano and D’yanna Medina; and Donovan Williams; brother, James Davis (Vernola); cousins, Francine McMillian, Thomasina Boykins (Toby), and Portia Richardson (George); close friends, Jimmy Isom, Doris Davis, Marie Davis, and Nina Ingram; and a host of other relatives and friends.
