Booker Teliaferro Jackson

On July 20, 1925 in Cambridge, Maryland, Booker Teliaferro Jackson was the youngest of 13 children born to William and Myrtle Jackson. When he was very young, the family moved to Seaford, Delaware where he went to school until he was a teenager. In his early teens he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and stayed for 32 years. As an adult he worked as a policeman. Although very stern at times, he had a great sense of humor. At the age of 20 he entered the service and served in the Army from 1945-1947. Around 1970, Booker left the city of brotherly love and moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he worked in the Baltimore City Public schools for several years. He retired from London Town Corporation in Eldersburg.Booker loved God and spent much time in the Church. He received and accepted his call to the ministry while at Tinley Temple in Philadelphia. He delivered his first sermon at age 18. His love of the church led him to pastor Harmony Baptist Church in Denton, Maryland. Later he served as Interim Pastor of the Berean Baptist Church in Pimlico (Baltimore). After transferring to the United Methodist Church Conference, he was assigned to supervise numerous rural charges. For more than a decade Rev. Jackson served as Associate Professor at the Wilbur Waters School of the Bible and Brooks Tutorial College. The college was founded by then Doctor, now Bishop Dolores M. Brooks. Later, he would also teach twice a week at the Clyde M. Tatum School of the Bible on Reisterstown Road in Baltimore.In 1998 Rev. Jackson was appointed bishop of the Zion Universal Presbyterian Church of God, where Apostle R.F. Tatum was senior pastor. He had two charges as bishop; the second was the New Life Christian Community Church in Linthicum. After the passing of Apostle Tatum, he served the Zion Church with Dr. Cynthia Tatum Jordan.For many years, Booker looked forward to the Annual Jackson Day held at John Wesley United Methodist Church in Seaford, Delaware. He was always the guest speaker and was held in high esteem by the people of his hometown. The last year of his life was spent at Mariner Health Nursing Home in Glen Burnie, Maryland. He was well cared for and endeared himself to staff and residents alike. Booker T. Jackson departed this life on Tuesday, April 1, 2003. He leaves to celebrate his memory his devoted wife of 32 years, Evangelist Shirley B. Jackson, two daughters, Jacqueline Townes and Betty Briddell, both of Philadelphia, two stepdaughters, Rev. LiAni Lewis and Angela Booth, two stepsons, Martin and Anthony Booth, seven grandchildren, eleven great- grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, colleagues in the ministry and friends.
