Celebrating the Life of Blanche Hellena Hines If you ever met Blanche Hellena Hines, then you already know she was not ordinary. She was not quiet. She was unforgettable. She was, in every sense of the word, that girl. With a personality that could light up the entire city (and somehow she knows just about everybody in it) and a spirit that refused to be dimmed. Blanche lived boldly, loudly, and unapologetically. We trust that God has now welcomed home one of His most vibrant creations and is graciously returning a woman He allowed the world to borrow. She was preceded in death by her father Norman Key, and devoted stepfather Clearance “Kicks” Frye. She leaves to cherish her memory: her beloved mother Helen Frye; her devoted daughter Louquanda "Medie" Whitmore (Calvin), her two grandsons, Calvin Whitmore Jr. and Carson Whitmore, who she loved dearly. She also leaves her siblings, Henry “Fox” Hines (Nakia), Sophia Taylor, Unithia McCutchen, Clearance Frye Jr., Jimmy Covington, Spencer Gissedanner; her godmother Diane Wright, her god-sisters Cassandra, Edna, Irish, and Helen; her goddaughter Sonia Jordan; nieces and nephews Nigel Hines, Shamon Taylor, Amon Taylor, Amarion Goode, Heaven Taylor; Shirley Ampey, Dorothea Stephens, and Donna Brown; a devoted uncle William Merman, devoted aunts Sylvia, Joanne, Vera, & Cynthia; and a host of other nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins; along with countless extended family members and friends who found comfort, laughter, and unconditional love in her presence. A proud graduate of Huguenot High School in the 1980s, Blanche later studied Information Technology. Though she did not earn a formal degree, make no mistake, she was both book smart and street smart. During her first week in hospice, when the social worker asked what she used to do for a living, she confidently replied that she had been a “package deliverer” for 37 years. Those in the room with her smiled because Blanche had a way of telling the truth with a twist. She was a hustler, entrepreneur, and trap queen long before they became buzzwords that people throw around. With at least 46 tattoos, Blanche wore her life story on her skin. Her doctors and nurses were often caught off guard, especially by the bold tattoo of a naked lady sitting on a crab with the words “Love to Ride,” a fearless tribute to her Cancer zodiac sign and her unapologetic personality. Then of course the legendary back tattoo that read “Da Baddest Bitch,” not simply for shock value, but because she embodied confidence, courage, and self-assurance long before social media made it trendy. Blanche loved to gamble, play cards, and in her words, “have a cocktail or two.” To say she was the life of the party would be an understatement. She didn’t just attend a soirée, she was the soirée. Her laughter and personality filled rooms. Her stories stretched long into the night and her presence could turn an ordinary moment into a memory. Beyond the spunk and sass was a woman with a heart of gold. Blanche would literally open her home to anyone who needed a place to go. Even when her kindness was taken advantage of, she never allowed it to harden her heart. She kept God close and in her later years became a Mormon. This strengthened her faith and deepened her relationship with the Lord. Blanche lived fully. She loved fiercely. She laughed loudly. While we mourn her physical absence, we celebrate a life that refused to be small. Rest peacefully, Blanche. Heaven just got sweeter. Welcome home, Karamel.
