Betty Sue Pollard

The Pain is Gone… Her Spirit Lives On… BETTY SUE SMITH, daughter of Daisy Hayes-Smith and Lee Andrew Smith, was born June 28, 1930 in Raleigh North Carolina. She lived a long, wonderful life and fought a hard fight; so it was with grace, strength and beauty that she departed this earth on May 30, 2011. Betty cherished her loved ones and leaves behind to cherish her memory; her daughters, Maxine Garland-Bey of Baltimore, Maryland and Darlene Sills of Columbia, Maryland; two sisters, Gladys Banks of Raleigh, NC, Rosa Smith of Camden, NJ and one brother, Al Smith of Raleigh, NC. She also leaves eight grandsons: Maurice, Anthony, Calvin, Melvin, Ali, Jimmy Kemp and Little Anthony; one granddaughter, Katrina; twelve great-grandchildren, Essence, Ayanna, James 3rd, Maya, Kendall, Marlene, Kevin, Kamirah, Ava, Malcolm, James Jr., Amina and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, family and friends. She was preceded in death by three children, Kemp, Eddie and Jaqueline Smith, her parents mother and eight siblings, Gertha Maggie, George, Ralph, Alice, James, Leroy, and BJ. Betty spent her youth and was educated in Raleigh, North Carolina. She married in 1949 and moved to Baltimore, Maryland in the summer of 1951. It was in Baltimore that she raised her five children. In 1981 she married the love of her life, “Pappy” Marshall Pollard. After focusing on her children’s education she returned to work and worked full time at Genesis Nursing Home for a term of 28 years. During her tenure at Genesis she received many accolades and awards for her dedication and service. Betty taught us the true value of work ethic and work full time until November of 2010! Even as her health began to fail her focus was getting well so that she could cook a meal for her family and return to work. We all marveled at strength and endurance at the ripe age of 80. All who had the fortune of knowing Betty will attest that she was a true Matriarch. She was a strong and proud woman who was admired and respected by all. She loved everyone and everyone loved her. SHE WILL TRULY BE MISSED.
