Betty Kay Dixon

Our Mom, the beloved Betty Kay Dixon, also known as BK, was born on January 2, 1946 to the late Ben and Elizabeth Pernell. She received academic and athletic achievement at Latta High School where she excelled as a majorette, on basketball courts and the softball fields until she graduated with the Viking's Class of 1964. In 1967, she married Aaron Pree Dixon, Sr., and settled in Richmond, Va. To their union, four beautiful children were born. Children who have always shown their mom the utmost love, adoration and respect, and truly gave her her flowers deservingly while she lived. Her four children are Margaret Elizabeth Mathis (Michael) of Mastic Beach, NY; Aaron Pree Dixon, Jr. (Cassandra) of Richmond, VA; Nito "Sha" Dixon of Amityville, NY; Charles Everett Dixon (Dejuana) of Richmond, VA; and Sandra Samuels (goddaughter). Our Mom raised us in a loving home, providing unconditional love and support to all of us. She worked for the Virginia Department of Transportation for over 25 years. She made us go to school every day. She was an active member of Grayland Baptist Church. She often time offered volunteer services to the church, hosted larger than life card parties, cookouts and fish frys. Our Mom returned to Amityville, New York in 2000, became a member of Farmingdale First Baptist Church and was seated as the Honorable Mother of the church on January 28, 2018. Even when her health became a challenge she kept the faith, never complained and encouraged us all to believe that God is in control and stronger in her then we are in the world. Her strength was tested over and over again. She fought a good fight. Never gave up. She battled breast cancer and colon cancer for many years and won the fight. She lived fiercely with her last illness of heart failure carrying her heart pump in a shoulder bag as humbled as she pleased. It never slowed her down. She continued to love, laugh, travel, cook her famous banana puddings and shepherd's pies, play cards and go to the casinos, casinos and more casinos. Her favorite movies were Gunsmoke, The Rifleman, Heat of the Night, and Steven Siegel movies. Mom leaves to celebrate her 72 years of love for family to her siblings Ben Pernell of Amityville, NY, Betty Jean White (Pete) of Scotland Neck, NC; Roosevelt Pernell (Melody), Rose P. Thomas (CD, deceased), Mary Curtis, Alice Pernell, Carolyn Dickerson, James Pernell (Tracy), Cooper Pernell all of Amityville, NY; Thomas Sampson (Jennifer) of Richmond, VA., and Joanne Pernell of So. Carolina. One sister preceding in homegoing, Mildred Ligett. Our Mom departed this earthly existence, trading in her crown for the cross. This is not a final goodbye. We will celebrate your life and legacy forever. It will be passed on through each of your children, Margaret, Aaron, Nito, Charles, your grandchildren, Quinnchel Tucker her husband Larry Tucker first of mommy lovely grandchildren to get married, Natwan Dixon, Mikey Mathis, Monae Dixon, Malcolm Mathis, Omari Dixon, Destiny Dixon, Charlie Dixon, Aisha Mathis, Jemel Mathis, Manuel Samuels, Andrew Mathis, and Brandon King; your great children, Paris, Mya, Kayle, Christen, Milan (deceased), and Makhi; sisters, brothers, extended family and loved ones. We celebrate our Mom's love for God, strength, love and guidance to all of us. We owe it to her to carry the BK torch of encouragement, family, and continue to walk by faith. Legacy of Love A wife, a mother, a grandma too, this is the legacy we have from you. You taught us love and how to fight, you gave us strength, you gave us might. A stronger person would be hard to find, and in your heart, you were always kind. You fought for all in one way or another, not just as a wife, not just as a mother. For all of us you gave your best, now the time has come for you to rest. So go in peace, you've earned your sleep, your love in our hearts, will eternally keep. We will always love you mom.
