Bessie May Booker

Bessie Mae Watkins Booker, daughter and the fourth child of the late Edward Watkins and Carrie Jones, was born on October 26, 1927 in Colgate, Maryland.Bessie received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System. She attended Paul Laurence Dunbar High School. She gained employment with the Garden Tea Room, Mercy Hospital and Johns Hopkins Hospital.Bessie was a loving and devoted mother and wife. She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Waverly Booker, who preceded her in death. She was blessed with one child, whom she took pride in, James Edward Watkins. He was the ideal son-he looked after and cared for his mother, prior to his sickness and his passing.Bessie gave her life to Christ, accepted the Invitation to Christian Discipleship and was baptized in 1976 by the late Rev. Dr. Edmond D. Meade, Sr., where she made Israel Baptist Church her church home. She was a loyal and faithful member in good standing. She would always attend Sunday morning worship services on a regular basis.Bessie was a loving, kind, but shy person who enjoyed life and loved to help others. Bessie was known for her hats and her beautiful smile. A wonderful cook, Bessie loved preparing meals for friends. She gave her love to all and will greatly be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.The Lord saw the road was getting rough for Bessie, and on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, the Lord touched her and gently took her into His loving arms to enter into the realm of eternal peace. The Lord said, “ Well done, my good and faithful servant, come home.” Not only is she now in the presence of Jesus, but also with her loved ones who have journeyed on before her. Bessie leaves to cherish her memory: one sister-in-law, Margaret Watkins of California; two cousins, Edward Paige and Earl Carter; one niece, Frances Sutherland of California; three great nieces and one great nephew; a very special friend who was always there for her, Terry Thomas; The Lilly Family, The Patterson Family, The Bonner-Richburg Family, Minister Earl & Sis. Ella Green; her godson, James Edward Hamilton; friends and her Israel Baptist Church Friends Family.
