Bernice Violetta Sterrett

BERNICE V. BARROW LOCUST WILLIAMS STERRETT departed this life on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 after a short illness. She was the third child born on October 19, 1924 to the late Metrah and Eva Barrow in Hyde County, North Carolina. Bernice received her education in Grifton, North Carolina. Bernice later married Fred Locust, Sr. and from this union three children were born: Otis, Fred and Shirley. In 1945, Bernice moved to Baltimore, Maryland. She worked for Proctor and Gamble fro several years. She later married Lyman Williams and from that union Patricia was born. Bernice worked for Charles and Barbara Cahn as a Nanny for over forty years. Bernice married Thomas Sterrett in 1988. Bernice and Thomas were known as the “Happy Travelers.” They travelled all around Baltimore City spreading the Gospel. They were faithful Bible Study Teachers at Bell Park Towers every Thursday night for the seniors and they held services every third Sunday of each month. They also hosted many bus trips to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and other entertaining trips. Bernice was a faithful member of Sweet Hope Free Will Baptist Church for many years. She attended Noon Day Prayer and Bible Study frequently. She also sang the praises of God on the Senior Choir Number one. Her hobbies were sewing, cooking and gardening. Bernice loved beautiful flowers with plenty of color. She was always busy every Spring getting her plants ready for the Summer and Fall to show off her beautiful colorful blooms. She took great care to make sure her front and backyard was well manicured. She was a true Woman who loved God and her family with all her heart. She was a great Mother and Grandmother. She was always trying to get you to eat something she had cooked with so much love and joy. She was the last one of nine siblings. She was preceded in death by: her two sons, Otis and Fred Locust; and four grandchildren, Hubert (Tony), Dwayne, Tony and Dana. She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Shirley L. Buie (Dwayne) and Patricia; six grandchildren, LaShawn (who was a devoted granddaughter), Otis Jr., Theresa, Tammy, Carl and Kenya; sixteen great-grandchildren, ten great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
