Deacon Benjamin Levon Spencer,Sr.

The life of Benjamin Levon Spencer, Sr. has left an indelible mark on the lives of many. Born August, 30, 1931 in Danville, Virginia, the youngest child of now deceased parents Wallace and Helen Spencer. He accepted Christ at an early age while attending Camp Grove Baptist Church. After growing up in Danville and graduating from John Mercer Langston High School. He attended Virginia State College and reconnected with his teenage sweetheart Mary Nelson. They married in 1951 and from their union four children were born: Cynthia (Carthel), Donna (Les), Ben Jr. (deceased), and Michele “Mikki” Spencer. In addition to his loving wife and daughters, he is survived by a sister, Valeria S. Long; brother, Wallace William Spencer Jr., both of Lanham, Maryland; grandchildren, Eric Spencer Cooper of Fairfax, Virginia and Michelle E. Robinson of San Diego, California; great-granddaughter, Emera S. Cooper, a dear niece, Sandra B. Nickens; a host of other nieces, nephews, and close family friends, two devoted, Rev. Reynolds Robinson, Sr. and Percell A. Lewis. Ben was a man of few words and many names, Herney to his wife, Pook-a-Pook to close family, Levon and Lou to others. Ben enjoyed gathering to socialize with family and friends celebrating many birthdays, anniversaries and holidays. He loved the great outdoors and spent many weekends at his Indian Acres home. Over the years, he traveled extensively with his entire family. Over the years, he busied himself with many community and faith based endeavors. He was a faithful member of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church, where he served on the Deacon Board for 50 years. He has also been a member of the Commonwealth Lodge #81 Masons, Astoria Beneficial Club, Inc. that recognized him as “Astorian of the Year” in 2008, the United States Croquet Association, Richmond Baptist Association, and the United States Postal Council. He proudly served as Neighborhood Watch Captain in his community for several years. His work life included employment with Dan River Mills, Advertising Associates, and Overnite Transportation Company where he retired after working for over 30 years. On Monday, September 17, 2012, God decided that his earthly work was done. He succumbed at Memorial Regional Medical Hospital lovingly surrounded by his wife and family and is now resting peacefully in eternity with the Lord. He will be remembered as a dedicated family man who lived his life with devotion to his wife and children, benevolence toward all mankind, and a strong faith in God.
