Barry V. Jones

Barry Vernon Jones peacefully and joyfully entered into eternal glory and rest in his appointed time with His Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on November 9, 2001 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Barry was born on June 22, 1961 at Provident Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland to Lillian and Horace Jones. Barry was the oldest of two children. He had a uniquely individual relationship with each member of his family. His untiring love and total devotion to his mother, Lillian “Ma”, was always evident. He loved his father and shared memorable moments until his father preceded him in death. Barry and his “little sister”, Tammy, shared a special sibling bond. He and his stepfather, Ronald Cuffie, also shared a loving father/son relationship. Barry had a distinctive bond with his cousin Terry Anthony Sparks, who preceded him in death, whom he referred to as his “big “ brother and best friend. Barry’s Christian life commenced at an early age when he was baptized and confirmed at The Episcopal Church of the Nativity. He and his family later joined the Episcopal Church of the Holy Covenant where Barry remained an active member until his death. Barry was a member of the Adult Choir, Brother of St. Andrews, and Boy Scout Leader. Barry was educated in Baltimore City and attended The Boy’s Latin School. He graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. Barry continued his education at Baltimore City Community College and Morgan State University where he majored in Political Science. He was a devoted member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Gamma chapter. He was inducted into the fraternity in 1981 and maintained an on-going brotherhood with “The New Wave Line”. Dave Oldham. Johnny Cooper, Gary White, Mark Simms, Rick Matthews and Malcolm Bivens. Barry served as an officer on the Pan Hellenic Council. Like his father, Barry was a member of the Hiram Grand Masonic Lodge of Baltimore. Barry was united in holy matrimony to Sharon Duncan, his college sweetheart and Soror, on October 6, 1990. From this joyful and faithful union they were blessed with two wonderful children, Juanita and Tyrell. The four enjoyed a wonderful family life that included hiking, bike riding, and endless precious family memories. Barry was committed family man, loving husband, and excellent father. He always put his family first with great detail and compassion. Barry began his employment career as Program Director of the Baltimore City NAACP Branch, and was later employed as a manager with Mano Swartz Furrier and Macy’s Department Store. His brilliant knowledge of politics and world affairs led to successful campaign employment with U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski and State Senator John Pica. He also served as the Deputy Campaign Manager for City Comptroller, Joan Pratt. At the time of his death, Barry was the Coordinator of the Personal Care Program for the Baltimore City Health Department. Barry was the official chef for his family and friends. His delicious gourmet, African-American and southern cuisine’s were appreciated and enjoyed by many. His cooking was an expression of his great love for his family and friends. Barry’s love for fashion was reflected in his distinguished and well-coordinated attire. His other hobbies included: fishing, art collecting music, gardening, skiing, photography, reading, dancing and vacationing with his family. He also had a unique appreciation for nature and wildlife. Photographically, he captured awesome and breathtaking scenes of God’s natural landscape. Barry enjoyed sharing stories of his favorite summer vacations in South Carolina with his grandparents, Bertha and James Baxter, and his aunt, Myrdis Walker, all of whom preceded him in death. Barry was truly a loving person who had a unique way of attracting people. His bright eyes, vibrant smile, and ability to eloquently communicate on diverse matters truly complemented his magnetic personality. Barry will always be well loved and remembered as a loving husband, father, son, brother, nephew, cousin, friend, and co-worker. He also had a heartwarming bond with his cousins and their spouses: Carolyn and Vernon, Michael and Sandra, Calvin, Frank Jr., “Flip”, Norman and Mary, Renee and Mike, Tony, Angie and Brandon, Moriet “Wee”, Teresa “Tee”, Alex and Carmen, Alicia “Lici” and Fred, and Jason. Barry leaves to cherish and pass on his loving legacy to: his faithful wife, Sharon Duncan-Jones; two precious children, Juanita Lerenzer Jones and Tyrell Terry Anthony Jones; his loving and devoted mother and stepfather, Lilliam and Ronald Cuffie; sister, Tamara Jones-Short; six aunts, Reba Bullock, Ruth Sparks and Celestine Morgan of Baltimore, Thelma Jones of Philadelphia; Lila Mae Jones and Mary Jones, both of Lexington County, South Carolina; five uncles, Frank Baxter of San Antonio, Texas, Wilbur Baxter and Julian Morgan of Baltimore, Ralph Baxter of North, South Carolina and Clarence Jones of Lexington County, South Carolina; a loving and supportive mother-in-law, Doris McQuaige Duncan; four sisters-in-law, Dorenzer Duncan-Wilson, Kimlee Duncan and Casey Pittman of Baltimore and Yvonne Duncan of Aurora, Ohio; two brothers-in-law, William Short of Baltimore and Ronnie Duncan of Aurora, Ohio; three nieces, Megan Short, Jericka Duncan and Jasmine Duncan; two nephews, Koran Short and Joshua Duncan; special McQuaige in-laws, Patricia, Carolyn, Jessie, and Troy; lifelong best friends, Mac Bivens, Bruce Clark, Mark Simms, Mike Cuthrell, Kevin Watson, Chuck McElveen, Dapheny Williams and Monica Summerfield; two god-daughters, Kristin Chase and Nylea Bivens, and a host of relatives and friends.
