Barbara Jean Stovall-Smith

Obituary Our beloved Barbara Jean Stovall-Smith was born on June 10, 1937 to the late Johnny and Retha Walker in Mullens, South Carolina. She went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, at the home of her eldest daughter. She was preceded in death by her siblings Howard, Wiley, LeVoid and John Walker, and Delores Frazier; husband, Harry L. Smith; son-in-law, Preston A. Clark; a great-granddaughter, Breyah C. Edwards, and best friend, Irma Jones. Barbara Jean (affectionally called “Ma-Mas” or “BJ”) accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and was a faithful and dedicated member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church until her illness. While there, she served as President and member of the E.H. Bouey Memorial Usher Board, a devoted member of the church’s Sunday School, Catechism class, and a volunteer for RITA on Tuesdays. In the early 60’s, Barbara was employed with M & B Head Wear on Main Street, where she was a seamstress. In October of 1973, she was employed by the United States Postal Service as a Postal Clerk for 23 years of dedicated service. Barbara Stovall was united in holy matrimony with Harry L. Smith on January 1, 1991 in Portsmouth, Virginia. In her leisure, she enjoyed traveling, shopping, fishing, bowling, and watching her beloved Young and the Restless and Washington Redskins on Sunday. Barbara leaves to cherish her memory two daughters; one devoted, Diane E. Clark and Karen Epps (Carroll); three grandchildren, one devoted, Tanya and Tonya Edwards, and Brandon Epps; two great-grandsons, Justin and Jaylen Hatten; eleven nieces and nephews, one favorite cousin Trussie (Blue) Jacobs, Sr.; and a host of other relatives and friends. We celebrate the accomplished life of Barbara Jean Stovall-Smith. She was our mother, our grandmother, our teacher, our wise guide through the up and downs of life.
