Barbara Hicks

BARBARA HICKS, daughter of the late Nepoleon Hicks and Queen Isabelle Hicks, departed this life on March 3, 2007 after a lengthy illness.Barbara was born on September 15, 1941 in Greensville County, Virginia. She received her education at Greensville Elementary School. At the age of thirteen, she had to quit school and labor to help take care of her family. A few years later, she then met and married Mr. Calvin B. Hicks. During this union of fifty years, they had two daughters.Barbara was a caring, awesome and loving person. She had a heart of gold. Barbara also had a side of her that when she said something she meant it. She always kept it real. She had numerous friends. Barbara was well known and respected in her community. She always carried the title of "Grandma" or "Ms. Ba" by the neighborhood boys. She always looked out and had major concern for those she encountered on a daily basis. Barbara was a very devoted family person, especially to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were her hearts.Barbara was a member of Jerusalem Baptist Church of Emporia, VA. When she moved to Baltimore she became a member of New Rehoboth Baptist Church. She became non-active in church after sickness entered her body. Before her sickness, she was a childcare provider for over a quarter of a century. One of the best at that!Barbara leaves to mourn: her husband, Calvin Hicks; two daughters, Ann and Sharon; two sisters, Rebecca Washington of Emporia, VA. and Rosa Franklin of Skippers, VA. (one sister Thelma preceded her in death); brother, Elmer Hicks of Emporia, VA (six brother, Archie, Junius, Roosevelt, Eddie, Willie and Robert preceded her in death); five grandchildren, Earl Jr., Tara, Carlton Jr., LaTasha and Durell; eight great-grandchildren, Briana, Da'shae, D'aisa, Taylor, Desmond III, Caron, Derrick and Durell Jr.; four special ones, Quinton, Antonio, Desmond Jr. and Lauren; son-in-law, James Walker of Baltimore (Larry Walker preceded her in death); two brothers-in-law, Tommy Washington of Emporia, VA. and George Franklin of Skippers, Va.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
