Augustine "Goldie" Hutchinson

If one had to choose a defining word in the life of Augustine Goldie Hutchinson, it would be family. To have known her was to know her family and to now her well was to become a part of her family. Born on October 23, 194, Goldie was the fourth child of seven children born to Walter H. and Augustine S. Jeffries in Baltimore, Maryland. It was within this large and boisterous clan that Goldie blossomed and forged her closest friendships with her siblings, particularly her oldest sister, the late Theresa Henson. As the middle children in the family, Goldie and Theresa were opposites by nature. Where Theresa was calm, Goldie was a risk taker, who loved to try new activities and often brought Theresa with her. Born and raised in the Catholic faith, Goldie and her family were active members of St. Pius Catholic Church. As an adult, she joined Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, where she was an active member until the onset of her illness. As a proud and active member of the Catholic Daughters, Goldie was known for planning and participating in their many events and activities. She loved to include her family in these events and often brought her many relatives and friends to the many dinners and banquets the organization sponsored. Educated in the Baltimore City Public School System, Goldie was a proud graduate of Frederick Douglass High School. Following high school, she persuaded her sister, Theresa, to go into modeling. After the brief modeling stint, Goldie became a dental hygienist at the University of Maryland Dental School and worked there for over thirty years. With her warm and comforting manner, she demonstrated the art of working with dental patients to the students and staff alike. On June 11, 1966, Goldie married the love of her life, Clifford Alvin Hutchinson. A strong and disciplined man, Cliff was Goldie’s rock. He adored her and served as her biggest fan throughout their forty-five year marriage until his death in 2011. Their love and partnership served as a living example of marriage for all who knew them. With the addition of their son, Gregory Alvin Hutchinson, the immediate family was complete. Always a creative person, Goldie loved arts and crafts, which she lavished on family and friends. She was well known for love of holidays with a special love for Christmas. She always decorated her home with a variety of Christmas trees. She especially loved to display the ceramic tree that she made. There was always a special bond between Theresa and Goldie, and in many ways, they were inseparable. With the birth of Theresa’s daughter, Elizabeth Kelly Henson Harley, the dynamic duo became a trio. In many ways, Goldie was a second mother to Kelly, providing as additional shoulder for her to lean on as she grew into a woman. They often went on weekend outings together including dinner and movies. The death of her husband and her sister, within a week of each other in 2011, dealt Goldie a devastating blow, and she struggled with her own illnesses and the loss of her constant companions in life. Throughout her lengthy illness, Kelly was by her side and was the last family member that Goldie saw before passing away. A lover of all types of games of chance, Goldie taught Theresa a variety of card games, and they often whiled away the hours playing cards into the wee hours of the morning. In addition to her love of cards, she and her husband loved to take trips to many of the gambling locations in the area, ranging from Dover Downs in Delaware to Atlantic City in New Jersey. Along with her husband, she was a major fan of the hometown teams with a special love for the Baltimore Ravens. She leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Gregory Alvin Hutchinson; three grandchildren, Gregory Alvin Hutchinson, Jr., Tiffany Hutchinson and Terrell Hutchinson; her siblings: two sisters, Frances Ella Jeffries and Elizabeth Brenda Hurst; two brothers, Walter Jeffries and Sam Jeffries; a devoted and loving niece, Elizabeth Kelly Henson Harley; three sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; nieces, nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
