Arthur Braxton

On Wednesday, November 11, 2015, God called one of his angels home Mr. Arthur “Pap” Braxton “Pap” was born Arthur Braxton on July 31, 1938 to the late Augustine O. & Rosa Holmes Braxton. He was the 6th of 8 children. Arthur was preceded in death by his sister, Ida Mae Watson, his brothers, Oliver, Sr., & Leroy, Sr. Arthur received his early education in the schools of Richmond, VA. He graduated from Armstrong High School. Upon graduation, Arthur completed some college courses at Virginia Union University. After 33 years of dedicated & outstanding service, Arthur retired from Defense General Supply as a Computer Supervisor. “Pap” was an admissions associate for the Colonial Downs Wagering Center from the time it opened until it closed, 15 years later. His co-workers enjoyed working with him & he made a lasting impression on all who entered. Arthur was a faithful member of the Virginia Choral Ensemble for over six decades. During his tenure,” Pap” sang tenor in the group. Some of “Pap”’s favorite songs were “His Grace and Mercy”, “I Won’t Complain” and “The 23rd Psalm”. Arthur was committed to attending every performance of the Ensemble as well as serving as one of the lead drivers for the group. In addition, he served as the co-chair for the Men’s Attire. For more than 60 years, “Pap” was a proud member of Cedar Street Baptist Church of God where he was a faithful member. He loved his beloved pastor, Dr. Anthony M. Chandler and claimed him as his son. “Pap” & Jean were members of the great LaVie ministry until the participation conflicted with their work schedules. They enjoyed the community activities of the group. One of their greatest joys was their regular fellowship with many friends through many card playing nights. It is through these card playing parties that they developed long lasting friendships with friends such as: Rev & Mrs. William House, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Dabney,Mr.& Mrs. Henry Harris,Mr. & Mrs. John Brice,Mr. & Mrs. Freddie Jones,Mr. & Mrs. Charles Anderson and Min.& Mrs. Gerald Golden. “Pap” was an avid Washington Redskins fan and enjoyed watching the games especially at the home of the Redskins, FedEx Field, with his son. Arthur leaves to cherish his memory, his loving & devoted wife,Jean;devoted sons: Michael A. Lewis(Lisa),Byron J. Braxton(Katrina)& Matthew L. Braxton(Enjolita);sisters: Louise Braxton-Hendricks, Annette Braxton, Rosetta Braxton-Perry; brother: Harold Braxton;sisters-in-law,Dolores Braxton & Hattie Hurd & a brother-in-law, Solomon Hurd;grandchildren;Michael A. Lewis,Jr.,Bria Lewis, Ashlyn Hamilton, Lauren Lewis, Kayla A. Braxton,Kylea O. Harris; godchildren: The Honorable Vanessa Jones,Rev. Justin House & Ronald Jones,Jr. foster daughter: Patricia Finney; along with devoted nieces,nephews,friends and family.
