Arthelia Thompson

Arthelia Thompson, the sixth child of twelve and last surviving, was born on May 24, 1922 in Roberson Couny, Lumberon, North Carolina to the late Mamie and Junious Floyd. He last three months brought on a few battles and setbacks for “Mom” and “Grandma” but through it all she was very strong and kept bouncing back until July 9, 2012 when she peacefully and quietly transitioned from this earthly life to be with the Lord. She attended and graduated from Hilly Branch High School in North Carolina where she excelled in basketball. She was recognized as a basketball star. After leaving home in search of employment, Arthelia being the kind, thoughtful, generous and loving person she was, would frequently send money and clothes back home to her family. “If I can help somebody as I travel along, then my living shall not be in vain”. On April 26, 1947 she married the late Henry A. Thompson who preceded her in death in 1987. In her early years, Arthelia liked to sew and furthered her education graduating from the Frederick Douglass Dressmaking School as a seamstress. She had a diverse range of jobs before becoming employed by The Baltimore City Public System from which she retired after many years as the Manager of food services at both Garrison Junior High School and Frederick Douglass High School. Arthelia received Christ at an early age. After becoming a member of Morning Star Baptist Church and before her health failed, she participated in the Pastor’s Aide, the Cluster of Clubs and the Building Fund Commission. She frequently worked in the church kitchen preparing food for a variety of church activities. She enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, cooking, baking and was famous for her “Salmon Cakes”. She will truly be missed by all who knew her and leaves to cherish her fond memory: two devoted sons, Henry (Beverly) and Jenira “Jay”; one aunt, Nettie Wilson; two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law; five grandchildren, Christopher (Ericka), Negasi “Craig”, Shante Thompson-Williams (Scott), Sharee Miller (Todd) and Shaivonne Thompson; five great- grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
