Area Jane Epps

AREA JANE EPPS, the daughter of the late Thomas Giles and Mildred Hughes Giles, was born on August 29, 1918 in Nelson County, Virginia. Area attended school in Nelson County, Virginia. She met and married Walter Lee Apps. Out of this union, they were the proud parents of six children, four sons and two daughters. Area’s favorite motto was “If I can help somebody, then my living would not be in vain.” She showed this in her church and the building where she lived for many years. She received many awards, certificates and citations for the dedicated and compassionate services she gave to others. Some of her certificates included: Appreciation of Devoted and Invaluable Services from the Ellerslie Golden Keys Club. This award was given for her valuable time and enriching the lives of senior citizens participating in “Eating Together in Baltimore.” Another recognition of her service was co-chair of the Winston Avenue Baptist Church Annual Family and Friends Day. These citations, recognitions and awards are just a few presented by the Governor and the Mayor through the years. Even in Area’s illness, she always had kind words to say to those who were taking care of her. She would keep you laughing at times and then bring you to tears at other times. You never knew what was coming out of her mouth. She had no problem telling you what she wanted and didn’t want. She would often tell the nurses in a minute, “I’m Tom Giles’ Daughter.” We are sure the caregivers had no idea what she meant. Some of the words used by the staff at Good Samaritan Nursing Center to describe her were: refined, grateful, pleasant, appreciative, busy body, compassionate, strong-willed, spicy and feisty. Area touched a lot of lives while at Good Samaritan Nursing Center. The staff always had something positive to say about her. Area was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Sr.; and two sons, Thomas and Walter Jr. She leaves to mourn: two daughters, Priscilla Gearl Fearington (Robert) and Sharon Sheppard; two sons, David (Magdelene) and Robert Epps; two sisters, Clora Brown and Anna Rose; a brother, Garfield Giles from Virginia; a brother-in-law, Douglass Epps of Washington, D.C.; two daughters-in-law, Mildred Epps and Delores Epps; fourteen grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
