Annie L. Coleman

Annie Lou Coleman, daughter of the late Willie and Aretha Harris, was born on October 3, 1918 in Burntcorn, Alabama. She departed this life on May 18, 2007 after a brief illness.Mom received her education through the Alabama School System. In 1951, Mom wed the late Virgil Coleman. Mom was employed with Johns Hopkins Hospital for twenty-five years until she retired in 1980. Mom accepted Christ in her life at an early age and she was a member of First Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church for over thirty-years.Mom was a very generous person. When Mom felt you were in need, she would help you out without judgement or any questions asked. Mom had a big heart and a great sense of humor, and her infectious laugh touched all of us. Mom was affectionately called Mom, Momma, Grandma, Auntie, Sister Coleman, or Ms. Coleman by everyone whose lives she touched. Mom was loving, caring and nurturing; not only did she raise her children, she helped raise her grandchildren, her great-grandchildren, her great-great-grandchildren and children in the neighborhood seemed to gravitate to her. Mom made sure we were well taken care of; she made sure we all had a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs. Mom taught us to believe in God and the importance of prayer. Mom taught us morals, values and norms. When we did not get along with each other, Mom was the mediator and keeper of the peace and whatever Mom suggested we do, it was done. Mom, our foundation, the mortar that held our family together, was an independent, strong-willed, family oriented and of course, a feisty woman who taught us everything we know. Mom is a part of all of us, we inherited her traits, we inherited her ethics, and her love of God. We thank God for Mom and we will miss her deeply.Mom’s daughters, Bobbie Jean Leach and Shirley Hood, preceded her in death; as well as, her eight sisters and brothers. Mom leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, John Poindexter and Charles Coleman; fifteen grandchildren, thirty-nine great-grandchildren, forty-one great-great-grandchildren, son-in-law, daughter-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
