Annie Irene Flood

On September 28, 2016, Annie Irene Eaton Flood passed quietly from life to eternal rest and peace. Annie, born on June 18, 1927, was the only child of Celia Gaylor and William Mc Kinley. Annie grew up in Baltimore where she was lovingly raised by a household of relatives. She was cherished by her grandparents, Lillie and Alexander Gaylor, founding members of Mount Hebron Baptist Church. As a little girl, Annie loved singing with the church choir and would often sing solos and duets with her Aunt Lula. Annie attended public school in Baltimore. In 1945, she graduated from Frederick Douglas High School. After high school, Annie went to work to save money for college. She dreamed of becoming a librarian; however, her dream was deferred when she met her first love, Wardell Eaton at a local dance. Annie married Wardell in 1946. The young couple quickly filled their home with children. In October 1959, Wardell passed away, leaving Annie to raise six children between the ages of two months and thirteen years of age. Annie was trained as a stenographer, bookkeeper and typist. She worked full and part-time jobs. By the grace of God, the help of family and friends and the kindness of strangers, Annie was able to provide a secure and happy home for her children. Annie’s faith helped her to overcome many challenges. She was a faithful member of Shiloh Christian Community Church for over 50 years. She served as president of the Gospel choir and was a frequent soloist. She was also an active member of the Supportive Mothers and Fathers and Tuesday Senior ministries. In 1964, after a long courtship, Annie married George Flood. George and Annie were members of the Couples Club, a group of friends that dined, socialized and vacationed together. George and Annie shared an entrepreneurial spirit. Annie, George and the children started an Arab truck business that grew into George’s grocery store. In 1969, she went to work for the Social Security Administration, attended college and obtained an Associates of Art degree in human services. Annie retired from the Social Security Administration in 1989. In 1997, George passed away and Annie was once again a widow. Annie moved to a senior apartment community in Gwynn Oak. She joined the Forest Park Senior Travel Club and served as the president. To stay active, Annie became a vendor at the Patapsco Flea Market. There she met her friend and companion, William Campbell. William, who shared her passion for travel passed away in 2010. A year later, Annie suffered a disabling stroke. After her stroke, she resided at Augsburg Village retirement community until her passing. She is survived by her children: Veronica Kuyinu, Wardell Eaton Jr., Denise Adah and Stephen Eaton, (her daughters, Brenda Edwards Smith and Vanessa Eaton-Lema preceded her in death) two sons-in-law, Kehinde Kuyinu and Eyibio Adah, daughters-in-law, Valerie and Ridna Eaton, eleven grandchildren and six great- grandchildren, her faithful friend and cousin, Mary Green and a host of family and friends. The family has asked that donations to the National Stroke Association can be made in her name in lieu of flowers.
