Anita Lewis Haskins

Anita Lewis Haskins, daughter of the late Owen E. and Rose Edwards Lewis, was born on May 6, 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland. On May 23, 2003. Anita departed this life after a lengthy illness.Anita attended Baltimore City Public Schools and graduated from Northwestern High School in 1971. She majored in Special Education at Coppin State College, where she received her Bachelor of Science Degree in 1975. Eager to pursue her education, Anita continued her studies at Coppin and obtained her Masters of Education Degree in 1976. After completing her formal education, Anita began her career as a Special Education Teacher. She held positions with the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Rosewood State Hospital. Eventually, she joined the Baltimore City Public School System as a full-time educator at Yorkwood Elementary School. There Anita found many years of happiness and joy in working with her children. Anita remained at Yorkwood until her illness prevented her from working with the children she truly adored. While teaching at Yorkwood, Anita pursued a second master’s degree at CBN (Regent) University in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She received a Master of Arts in Education in 1989.Many accolades were bestowed upon Anita. She was particularly proud of receiving the Wolf Trap teacher Award from the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts and Wolf Trap Institute for Early Leaning through the Arts in 2000. Also, Anita joined the Morgan State University Community Choir under the direction of Dr. Nathan Carter. While a member, she performed at national and international engagements.In 1974, Anita married Embress Lee Haskins, Jr., out of this union three children were born. Gina, Jessica and Elizabeth who preceded her mother in death.Anita valued family unity and believed that vacations should include activities that benefit the children. Therefore, the family traveled extensively. She especially enjoyed cruising the Caribbean and found Alaska to be a land unspoiled by man. Anita traveled to Jamaica, Bermuda, and Nassau. The family traveled throughout the United States, visiting both Coasts, and specific points of interest along the way.Anita accepted Christ in her early years and was a faithful member of Providence Baptist Church until her marriage. She and her husband joined Morning Star Baptist Church in Catonsville, Maryland under the leadership of the late Rev. Dr. Jentry E. McDonald, Sr. While at Morning Star Baptist Church, Anita was an active and faithful member participating in many activities and organizations. Anita enjoyed the theater. She joined the Jentry E. McDonald Theatrom Players and performed in and scripted a number of plays. She loved to sing with the Spiritualities Choir. Anita was an active member and held various offices within the choir. She was well known for coordinating the fruit sales, which were a huge success. Anita was one of the original founders and supporters of the Head Start Program at Morning Star Baptist church. Also, Anita was a member of the Pastor’s Aide Society and Birthday Circle. She enjoyed her church family and coordinated many of the church’s activities. After many years of faithful service, she and her family joined Faith Christian Fellowship World Outreach in Owings Mills where she remained a member until her illness.Anita made numerous friends at church, work and in the community. Whenever there was a need for help, she would be right there to offer assistance without hesitation. Everyone who knew her will miss her.She leaves to mourn: her husband, E. Lee Haskins, Jr.; two daughters, Gena M. Haskins, and Jessica R. Haskins; three sisters, Regina Lewis, Frieda Lewis, and Marlene Stevens; two brothers, Rev. Marvin Lewis and Byron Lewis; two aunts, Ms. Classie Edwards, and Margaret Boyd; one uncle, Rev. Robert Edwards; mother-in-law, Mrs. Anna Haskins; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sheila Lewis and Mrs. Joan Washington; nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
