Alvin DeWayne Shelton, Sr. 1947 | 2013 To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. Ecclesiastes 3:1 Alvin DeWayne “Red” Shelton, Sr. was born in Richmond, Virginia to Nannie Marie Shelton on July 7, 1947. Alvin was educated in Richmond Public Schools and is a graduate of Maggie L. Walker High School’s Class of 1965. Upon graduation from high school, he entered the United States Air Force, from which he was honorably discharged. He earned an Associate’s Degree from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and worked in community service for several years. Alvin was later employed at the McGuire VA Medical Center – Richmond, from where he retired after 27 years of service. “Red” loved being with his family more than anything. Even traveling, entertaining, and other activities were always shared with them. His great sense of humor and devotion were also shared with his friends. He especially loved sharing his once unlimited energy with his children’s friends, whether through sports or by just hanging around with lots of advice. Red’s favorite pastime was taking pictures. If you ever met Red he probably has a picture of you – he didn’t even have to know you! With a great wide smile and warm heart he will truly be missed. Alvin departed this life quietly on January 4, 2013. He was preceded in death by his father, Junius Carter, Sr. and sister, June Carter Rattliff. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Joyce Shelton; son, Alvin Shelton, Jr.; daughters, Tanya Washington and Deanda Shelton; grandson, Luke Washington; granddaughters, Amanda Shelton and Ari Washington; a devoted mother, Nannie Marie Carter; three brothers, Junius Carter, Jr., Eric Carter and Marlon Haskell; sisters, Deborah Carter, Carolyn Carter and Bonnett Haskell-McDowell; uncle, Sterling Page; two brothers-in-law, Franz Rattliff and Clarence Perry; several nieces and nephews, among them devoted, Anika Carter; a host of other relatives and friends, among them devoted Alexander Dolly and Alfred Holloway. Alvin may no longer be with us physically. Just remember that he will always be with us in spirit and memory. Though They’re Gone You can shed tears that they are gone, or you can smile because they lived. You can close your eyes and pray that they will come back, or you can open your eyes and see all that they have left. Our heart can be empty because you can’t see them, or you can be full of the love that you shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember them and only that they are gone, or you can cherish their memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, or you can do what they would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on. ~Author Unknown~
