Alvenia Carter

On Wednesday, January 11, 2012, ALVENIA B. CARTER, slipped away into eternal rest after a long battle with illness. Alvenia was born on July 15, 1939 to the late Mattie and Robert Benjamin, Sr. “Mena,” as she was affectionately called by family and friends, loved God with all her heart, and was baptized at Second Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland. She was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System, graduating from Paul Laurence Dunbar High School and later received a Certificate of Completion from The Watterson Center as a Clerk Typist. On June 18, 1966, Alvenia married James B. Carter and from this union, they raised two daughters, Dondra Benjamin and Judith Carter. Alvenia was always a hard-working woman, holding many positions as a laborer. Some companies she worked for were: Benddix, Western Electric, General Motors, Martin Marietta, Eastern Stainless Steel and The Chimes from which she retired in 2001. Over the years, Alvenia took Continuing Education classes at both Essex and Dundalk Community Colleges; and enjoyed many activities to include dancing, playing cards and crocheting. Later in life, but before her illness, Alvenia enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and quiet time watching old western and Kung-Fu movies. Alvenia leaves to cherish her memory: her beloved husband, James B. Carter; two daughters, Dondra Benjamin and Judith Carter-Daniels; two granddaughters, Aubry Carter and Jordan Carter-Daniels; one grandson, Chad Carter; one great-grandson, Jaden Freeland; one great-granddaughter, Torrie Freeland; one son-in-law, Otis Daniels; two sisters, Melvatta and Mattie Benjamin; one brother, Gregory Benjamin; four brothers-in-law, Willie Coppage, Joe, Frank and George Carter; six sisters-in-law, Roberta Sherman, Doris Floyd, Archie Bell Edge, Addie Mae Bellamy, Audrey Carter and Daphane Carter; and a host of other relatives and friends. Preceding Alvenia in death were four brothers, Robert, Roosevelt, David and William Benjamin; one sister, Lueaster Coppage; and three sisters-in-law, Esther Crinton, Peggy Pringle and Leathia Carter.
