Alto Mae Holt

Alto Mae Burton-Holt was born October 24, 1923, to the union of Willie and Carrie Burton in Chesterfield, Virginia. Alto accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at First Baptist Church (Centralia). Alto received her formal education in the Chesterfield County Public School system. She soon moved to Richmond, Virginia and met the love of her life Curtis Holt, Sr. To this union was born Valerie, Curtis Jr, Constance, and Sir Walter. In 1959, she joined Ephesus Seventh Day Adventist Church under the leadership of Elder L.R. Preston. Alto found fullness working with children in both Sabbath School and the Ephesus Junior Academy. In 1968, she started her career for Richmond Public Schools where she worked at Robert E. Lee School and later transferred to Fairfield Elementary School for twenty years when she retired in 1988. Mom Alto “Granny Mae” loved her family unconditionally. One of her favorite hobbies was putting together puzzles, so it made it easy for picking a gift for her birthday and holidays. She loved making her famous “basketball yeast rolls” during the holidays. Alto was mostly known for her different style of hats whenever she attended church or family functions. Of course her favorite food was anything chocolate, and homemade chicken and dumplings. Alto M. Holt departed this life on Saturday, December 12, 2020 to have eternal life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Carrie Burton; husband Curtis Holt Sr., children Valerie Holt-Crawford and Sir Walter Holt; siblings, Louise Friend, Ethel Volley, Lillian Goode, Carrie B. Smith, James Burton, Randolph Burton and Willie N. Burton. She leaves to cherish her memory: loving son and daughter, Curtis (Cherie) Holt Jr. and Constance Christian; siblings, Lucy B. Cherry and Alexander Burton; adored grandchildren, Danielle Crawford, Jermaine Christian, Charisse Holt, Angela Christian, Tyrone Christian, Curtis Holt III; great-grandchildren Victoria Hurdle, Baldwin Waddey III, Carlisa Calixte, Zachary Calixte, Zeyann Christian, Joshua Holt-Smith, Aaliyah Christian; great great-grandchildren Vaylen Brown, Chayce Waddey, Emmanuel Waddey, Vayla and Val’lynn Hurdle; a host of nieces, nephew, cousins and dear friends.
