Alonzo Royce Thompson

On Tuesday,April 6,2010,our God in His infinite wisdom called His beloved son to His home in paradise. Alzonzo Royce Thompson was born to Phillip Gordon and Marie Patterson Thompson on March 15,1931 in New Kent County,Virginia. He was the youngest of four sons born to this union.Alzonzo was educated in New Kent County public schools. He professed his love for his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at an early age and joined Lebanon Baptist Church. He was a faithful member until his illness.On May 23,1952 he was united in holy matrimony with Bernice Clara Newbill. To this blessed union were born three children:Brenda Joanne,Gordon Alzonzo,and Theresa Wanda.As a young family man,Alzonzo held various jobs that honed his natural skills and abilities. He was proficient at several trades:painting,carpentry,mechanical,electrical,and plumbing. He built an addition to the original structure of his home. On this project,he even made the mortar and laid the bricks alongside professional bricklayers. Alonzo was truly gifted. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in 1978 as a supervisor in the welding division.Alonzo cherished life and loved to laugh. He especially got a kick out of good-naturedly ribbing Redskins fans. Family was always very important to him,one of the highlights and eagerly anticipated events every year was the Patterson Family Reunion. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting,fishing and gardening. He looked forward to vacations in the Shenandoah Mountains and Myrtle Beach.Alonzo was a devoted husband,a loving father,grandfather,brother,uncle,cousin and friend. He leaves to cherish precious memories,his wife Bernice C. Thompson,children,Brenda T. Farris,Gordon Thompson(Lillian Winston),Theresa W. Fisher(Jeffrey Artis);two grandsons,Gordon,Jr.and Ross Thompson,two granddaughters,Alonna and Danielle Fisher,four sisters-in-law,Thomasine Thompson(devoted),Shirley DeShazo,Julia Jones and Rosa Newbill,one brother-in-law,Ward Newbill,Jr. and one aunt,Bessie Smith. A host of nieces among them one devoted,Dr. Yvonne Maddox,a host of nephews among them three devoted,Hugo,Phillip and Kenneth Thompson. Alonzo will also be fondly remembered by many cousins,other relatives and friends,one devoted,April Thompson.
