Alonzo R. Myers

Alonzo Richard Myers, Jr. (Rick), son of Alonzo R. Myers, Sr. and Dorethea Bagley Myers, was born on April 15, 1951, in Baltimore, Maryland. He cherished the love and the time he shared with his grandmother (Momma), the late Tinnie Taylor Bagley. As a young boy, his incessant and twinkling smile generated his nickname, Smiley.Rick attended Baltimore City public schools, and in 1969, he graduated from Baltimore City College High School where he excelled in Varsity Football as well as Track and Field. Rick was one of the first African Americans to receive an athletic scholarship to Bucknell University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1973. Rick went on to earn a Master of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of Baltimore.As a Commissioner of the District Court of Maryland, Rick earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues for his straightforwardness and no nonsense approach to life and learning. His social consciousness and strong sense of values were reflected in his comments and deeds. He retired as a Court Commission in the mid 1990s after completing more than 20 years of service.Rick enjoyed spending long weekends in Central Pennsylvania, where he taught his friends a deeper appreciation of their surroundings and inspired them with his positive spirit and enthusiasm for life. He also enjoyed sitting in his favorite chair watching various sports and movies. He will always be remembered for his loving generosity. Rick always put his misfortunes aside and sought to help others. He was Maryland’s longest living dialysis patient. Although Rick endured dialysis treatment each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for 28 years, he never complained or sought sympathy. He lived life to the fullest and grew in wisdom. His belief in God was ever present and never wavered. Rick fought a good fight and died a true soldier. His life was a testament of strength in the battle of physical adversity.Rick departed this life suddenly on April 24, 2003. He touched the hearts and stimulated the minds of many, and many fond memories of Rick are cherished by his devoted and loving mother, Doretha; his father, Alonzo (Slim) of Fort Lauderdale, FL. ; his aunt, Lena Sprights; a host of cousins; and a devoted circle of friends including James Toney; Roger Brown and Family, of Pennsylvania; Debra Brewington Gittens; Gerald Bowie and Jerlys Bowie Henderson of Nevada; LaVerne Nicholson Sykes and Gaylen Grant of California; and by many other families of which he was a part. His spirit as a person and a friend is described in Proverbs 18:24..
