Alma P. Byrd

“I will lift mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; he that keepeth thee will not slumber.” Psalms 121 Alma Pauline Lee Byrd, was born to the late Mr. & Mrs. Samuel and Lottie Lee on August 18, 1935 in Baltimore, Maryland. Ms. Alma Lee Byrd departed this life on Saturday October 17, 2015 during the early morning hours. At a young age she joined Fountain Baptist Church where she was baptized. She is preceded in death by her late brother Mr. Samuel Lee Jr., her older sister Ms. Lucille Brown, her two granddaughters the late Latoyna Owens-Bey, and the late AiSatu Lambertis, her late husband John Reece Haywood and her partner the late Mr. James (Andrea) Fields. Ms. Alma Byrd received her education with the Baltimore City Public School System. In her professional life she was a hardworking and reliable employee. She worked in the healthcare field majority of her life with the hospitals St. Joseph and Good Samaritan. She worked for Good Samaritan Hospital for 30 years before retiring. She raised her five children: Irene, Germaine, Gary, Alma, and Kariem. Ms. Byrd enjoyed traveling with her young sister Hilda, singing songs, dancing, listening to music, and loved spending quality time with family and friends. Her favorite time of the year was Christmas time because it allowed her an opportunity to extend her blessings to family and friends. Ms. Alma was a kindhearted spirit, who opened her home to all and it was a place known as a safe haven. She was known as “The Queen Mother of the 500 Block of Richwood.” Ms. Alma leaves to cherish her memories her five children Irelene Lee August-El (Allen), Germaine Robinson (Michael), Gary Byrd (Emily), Alma Maybane (Timothy), and Abdul-Kariem Alvez-El (Shamia); her most beloved grandson, Dump; and her younger sister Hilda Carter (Granvlile); one of her biggest blessings in her life her great-granddaughter Charm Allen, who was her pride and joy who became her everything. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; her aunts Kathleen and Emma; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Psalms 91: “He that dwells in the secret place of the most high, shall abide under the shadows of the Almighty. I would say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”
