Alice Mazel Jackson Hendricks

A Life Well Lived Alice Mazel Jackson Hendricks was born in Henrico County,VA on November 18,1927 to Addie Clarke Jackson Prentice and Fountain Jackson,Sr. Alice was one of five children from that union and the last surviving offspring. In 1947 she married Will Jackson,and to that union her cherished daughter Alma was born. Alice later married John Hendricks in 1964. This union lasted until his death in 1976. Alice graduated Armstrong High School and attended business school upon graduation. Developing excellent administration and business office skills,Alice secured a position at the Tabacco Workers Internation Union as a private secretary for their first African-American Vice President,George Benjamin. She became a typing and shorthand wizard and continued to utilize her extraordinary and coveted shorthand skills well adter retirement. After leaving TWIU Alice began working at the Mathematics & Science Center of the Richmond Public School system in Virginia. There she was employed as an administrative secretary for nearly 25 years and developed many lifelong and devoted friendships. Alice viewed life as a sense of adventure..She traveled to Morocco,France,Spain,Montreal,Las Vegas,and London-a place she discovered she loved. She also relished crossword puzzles,enjoyed dancing,and once walked the rocks of the James River in Richmond with colleagues from the Math and Science Center. Alice was preceded in death by her parents,and siblings Fountain,Jr.,Ellen,Garland and Lillian;two nieces-Madelyn Jackson Scott and the adored Barbara Harris Barrett. She will be so missed by her daughter,Alma Jackson Hopkins of Chicago,IL;nieces, including the devoted and beloved Carolyn Harris-Burney(Jim)of Bloomfield,CT,Joan Jackson Mayo (Johnny),Elaine Jackson Blaylock (Eddie),and Joyce Jackson Franklin;nephews,Garland Jackson,Jr.,Teddy Jackson,and Jerry Jackson;several great nephews and many great nieces including the devoted Audra Barrett Dembele (Mamadou) of Upper Marlboro.MD, and the beloved Tanya M, Barrett of Stone Ridge,VA,plus great-great nieces and great-great nephews. Additional extended family,the adored William B. Barrett,Jr.(Diane).Edith Harris and Dorothy Vaughan;and lifelong friends from work including the beloved Jerome Randolph (Sandra),Betsy Waring,Debbie Mitchell and Virginia Ellett. Alice possessed a unique style and enjoyed doing things in her own inimitable way. She was affectionately known for her sass,humor and wit. She was never afraid to make a mistake and more importantly to admit it. We will always remember her candor,zeal,and enthusiasm. She will forever be an inspiration to us all for a life well lived.
