Alice D. Welborn (Johnson)

Alice Delores Welborn Johnson, the second of seven children was born on August 18, 1944 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Robert Welborn and Mary Welborn. She departed this life on Friday, April 2, 2004 after an illness.She was educated in the Baltimore City School system. She was employed with Sears Roebuck & Company, Johns Hopkins Hospital and with the State of Maryland for many years until her illness necessitated her early retirement.Alice was married to William P. “Billy” Johnson. This union produced three children. Alice was a devoted wife and loving mother. After her children were all grown, and after becoming a grandmother, Alice fulfilled her dream of continuing her education. She received her associate’s degree from The Baltimore City Community College and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in Applied Psychology, graduating from Coppin State College at the age of 50. This was one of her proudest moments. Alice’s dream was to work with children.Alice was a member of Huber Memorial United Church of Christ. She enjoyed the services, fellowship until her health began to fail and she was no longer able to attend. Alice still fulfilled her obligations to the church and enjoyed receiving the tapes of the services.Alice loved her family dearly. She celebrated their accomplishments and enjoyed family gatherings. She took a special interest in learning her family history “Al,” as her family often called her, was an excellent cook. She enjoyed making her famous tuna and macaroni salad, and baked the best carrot cake and chocolate cake. Alice loved creating different dishes. She also enjoyed dancing and swimming. Alice was a beautiful and unique person. Her beauty was effortless, and she always took pride in her appearance and in that of her children. Alice had a wonderful sense of humor and she loved sharing in funny stories with family.During her six years at the Keswick Nursing Home, Alice made many friends who, along with the staff, became deeply attached to her. She was especially fond of fellow resident Howard Davis.She leaves to cherish her loving memory: three children, Kevin R. Johnson, Sr., Karen Johnson Shaheed, Esq.; and Kimberly R. Johnson; one daughter-in-law, Tammy Johnson; one son-in-law, Khalid Shaheed; three grandchildren, Karen, Kevin Jr., and Kimberly S. Johnson; her devoted mother, Mary Welborn; two sisters, Geraldine Welborn and Ruth Allen; two brothers, John and Kenneth Welborn; (siblings David and Thelma Welborn predeceased her)’ her mother-in-law, Thelma Johnson; two brothers-in-law, Henry Mitchell Johnson and James Allen, Sr.; two sisters-in-law, Johnie Sturdavant and Deborah Evans; one aunt, Dorothy Welborn; lifelong friend Carol Kendrick; special friends, William and Barbara Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.
