Alice Marie Burrell

Alice M. Hudson Burrell was born, May 25, 1941 to the late Sandy and Arah Hudson. She is preceded in death by her brother, Lester Hudson. Alice was raised in the Navy Hill area of Richmond, Virginia. She attended Richmond Public Schools. She was baptized at Seventh Street Triumph Baptist Church at an early age. Alice also was known as “Bay Sis” to family and friends. Bay Sis was an “enforcer” for her brothers and sisters. She made sure they were well protected. She was a social butterfly. She loved to dance, sing, and play “Bid Whist” where she was nicknamed “Bid-Mo”. She had other fun times with the family and friends playing “Bingo” and “Pokeno”…aint no harm in having fun with family and friends! Alice met her love, Claude Burrell at the Woolworth counter sixty plus years ago and they joined in matrimony, July 7, 1959. They moved from Clay Street to the Church Hill area and resided at their home in Central Gardens of Henrico County. She later moved with her “Baby Girl Yvonne”, her primary caregiver, in Chester. Alice worked in many capacities, but her favorite job opportunities were Assistant Manager of Zayre Department Store and the Receptionist at the Richmond Catholic Diocese of Richmond. She was a faithful member of Elizabeth S. Spurlock Chapter #236 O.E.S.P.H.A. where she was Past Worthy Matron. She loved to make people smile and enjoy the life God had blessed them with! Alice joined Rising Mount Zion Baptist Church in the early seventies. She was a member of the Deaconess Ministry, Gospel Choir, Senior Choir, Missionary Ministry, Serving Care Ministry, and she also served as the Church Sexton. Alice worked passionately and was committed to her service for the Lord. Wherever she served, she served whole heartedly. Alice did not let anything stop her from coming to the house of the Lord. She was determined not to be defeated by her illness. She let the Lord fight her battle! Alice passed from her earthly home to her heavenly home Wednesday morning March 11, 2020. She is preceded in death by her parents, Sandy and Arah Hudson; brother, Lester Hudson. She leaves to celebrate her life, her husband of 60 years, Claude O. Burrell, Jr.; her beloved children, son, Claude A. Burrell (Letitia); daughters, Sheryl Smith (Thomas) and Yvonne Burrell; five adoring grandchildren, Terence, Justin, Danielle, Janai, and Joshua; goddaughter, Nikki Turner; two sisters, Romanta Robinson and Constance Lightfoot (Gilbert); brother, Jesse Hudson (Eleanor); brother-in-law, Melvin Cooper; three aunts, Juanita Price (Robert), Virginia Bobbitt, and Morristine Bowman (Rufus); a host of loving and caring nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; cousins and friends among them Shirley Hudson, Mildred Johnson, Christine Marrow, Constance Marrow, Julia Simmons, Gloria Wright, Central Garden Leisure Group, Elizabeth S. Spurlock Chapter #236 O.E.S.P.H.A., Richmond Catholic Diocese of Richmond former coworkers and her beloved Rising Mount Zion Church Family. Alice M. Burrell will be missed, but never forgotten…rest but keep letting your light shine through your beam from heaven!
