Alexander Blackwell

ALEXANDER BLACKWELL, beloved son of Ruby Stephens and the late Wardell Blackwell, was the oldest of seven children, born in Baltimore, Maryland on August 26, 1950. Alexander was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. He was kind-hearted, willing to help anyone, feed them and gave what little he had if they needed it. Alexander had a flair for writing songs and poetry and a unique style of singing. He was the lead singer of the group "Prize Package." His passion was to record his songs one day and be rich, but he was already rich with his faith in God. He had a tremendous faith and belief in God that he carried even until death. Alexander was always ready to listen to friend's and family member's problems and slow to anger or judge. His nickname was "Billy" and he could be a force to reckon with when he did become angry. He held a 9th degree purple belt in Tae Kwon Do, sparred with Sugar Ray Leonard for an exhibition; he boxed with Larry Holmes and was forever in love with weight-lifting. Alexander lived an active life, jogging, martial arts and even did professional body building shows around the city. Alexander suffered a knee accident that restricted his activities but he continued to do most of what he loved. He loved the youngsters and young people, he always wanted to nurture their positive sides and never met a child he did not like. The neighborhood young people loved and respected him and he did likewise. Alexander had a personality and smile that won you over as soon as you met him. Alexander was not perfect, he was a human being that fell into traps like many others. He learned in life the most important things that mattered; and it's not how long you live, but how well you live. Alexander had open-heart surgery in 2004 and his system was too weak to ward off infections. He succumbed to a heart-strep infection on September 16, 2005. His exit from this life was peaceful. Alexander leaves to mourn: his beloved wife of thirty-five years, Mrs. Dorathea Richardson-Blackwell; and one daughter, Adrienne Blackwell. He is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Ruby Stephens; one brother, James Stephens; and one sister, Loretta Freeman; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. There are so many friends that we apologize that we cannot name them here. Alexander will be greatly missed but he was well loved. Rest in peace.
