Alean Smith

ALEAN SMITH was born on February 24, 1927 in the White Hill Community of Halifax, North Carolina. She was the fourth child of the late Ealy Ivey and Sarah Smith Ivey (Wilkins). Alean peacefully transitioned into eternal rest on Sunday, January 14, 2018. As a child, Alean grew up on Pierce's Farm and received her formal education at the Halifax County Training School in Weldon, North Carolina. She often visited her home to attend several Weldon class reunions. Alean soon moved from her home to Washington, DC. There she was united in Holy Matrimony to James Smith on October 21, 1949. Soon after they moved to Baltimore, Maryland. She was blessed with five beautiful children whom she loved and was fiercely protective of. At an early age, Alean confessed her faith in Christ and shortly after joined the Little Ark Church which later became the Ark Chuch under the leadership of Bishop J. L. Carter. She was a very faithful and supportive member and Mother of Church. Alean was an active member of the Women's Ministry and the mother of the Tribe of Rahab. Every Sunday, she sat in her regular seat located on the forth row from front in the aisle seat. In her early adult life, she was employed at Comfy Manufacturing Company. Later, she accepted a position at Towson State College. Shortly after, she decided to accept another job opportunity at Spring Grove Hospital and retired in 1991. Alean enjoyed her life to the fullest. She was fiercely independent and had no problem telling others what was on her mind, whether they agreed or not. She went wherever she wanted to go. Momma's favorite pastime was reading her bible and talking to her sister and other relatives on the phone. However, what she really enjoyed most was traveling and going to the casino. Alean was the pride and joy of the Cecil Ave. neighborhood. Everyone knew and loved her. During the summers, she sat on her steps to entertain and talk with neighbors. Many of the neighbors, who moved away, often came back just to visit and show their love for her. Alean was truly the Matriarch of her family and the Cecil Avenue community. Those left to cherish Alean's memory are: her children, Barbara Jean Ayers, Ronald Eugene Smith, James Andre Smith (Lavern) and Gregory Smith; sister, Lattice Ivey McNeil; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; a host of great-greatgrandchildren, niece, nephews and cousins. Alean also had two special children, Elsie Maddox and Nikisha Marion. A special friend in Kay Biles. Preceding her in death are: her husband, James Edward Smith; daughter, Carolyn Michele Smith; grandson, Darryl Ayers; and siblings, Beatrice Ivey Bell, Connie Louise Ivey Turner, William Ealy Ivey, Helen Odell Ivey Chandler and Sarah Elizabeth Ivey Williams.
