Albertha B. Crawley

Albertha Ballard Crawley, only child of the late Emma Brunson and Ed Ballard, was born on May 25, 1921 in Andrew, South Carolina, later moving to Sumter. She departed this life on Sunday, July 7, 2002 at Sinai Hospital. As a teenager along with her Mother, she settled in Baltimore, Maryland. She graduated from Frederick Douglas High School I 1939. Albertha was baptized and joined Perkins Square Baptist Church where she was member of the Mann Memorial Circle; she later moved her membership to Mt. Moriah Baptist Church in 1998. She was employed by the Social Security Administration during World War II; Albertha worked over 35 years, retiring in February 1978 as a Technical Assistant. Albertha married John Archer Crawley, Jr. in 1950 and out of this union three children were born: Barbara Elaine, John Archer III, and Clinton Bernard. In 1980 her loving grandson, Jamal John Crawley was born who became the joy and love of her life. Her pastimes included sewing, crocheting and knitting, playing pinochle, and ten pins bowling. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends in her home, sharing laughter and good times. Albertha will be remembered for continuing to make each holiday special—trimming the tree and hanging the Christmas stockings, filling Easter baskets with treats and preparing wonderful meals. After retiring Albertha joined two bowling leagues; The Senior Flames and the Merry Makers. She looked forward eagerly to her twice a week bowling days. In 2000 she fulfilled a dream of taking an Alaskan Cruise, flying for the very first time at the age of 79 years. A life long reader and an inquisitive nature, Albertha enrolled in computer classes and began surfing the Net almost daily. Her hearty laugh, her style and her candor will be missed. Along with the traits, her strength and personality made a lasting impression. She leaves to mourn: her daughter, Barbara; two sons, John and Clinton; one grandson, Jamal; one cousin, Mrs. Rosetta Madison; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Sarah C. Harper; a close friend, Mrs. Margaret Banks and her daughter Vikki Banks (her “Baby Girl”); numerous nieces, nephews and cousins who will fondly remember “Aunt Bertha”, and many friends.
