Alberta Cragway

ALBERTA CRAGWAY, affectionately known as “Bert”, was born May 14, 1924 in Bent Creed, Buckingham County, Virginia to the late Royal J. and Minnie P. Cragway. Suddenly at her home, on Friday, January 13, 2006, the Lord called Alberta to eternal rest. Alberta along with her brother and sisters were baptized at Union Baptist Church in Sparrows Point, Maryland.In 1942, she graduated from Douglas High School in Baltimore City. In 1943, she married Race C. Jones, Sr., in Baltimore, Maryland. She loved to cook and worked as a food server and cashier for H & L Greene’s in Baltimore. Later, she completed a course of study in sanitary maintenance and worked for Abacus Corporation, a cleaning service company. Much of her employment as a housekeeper was spent working in various department stores such as Stewart’s, Hecht’s, and Brager Gutman’s in downtown Baltimore.Alberta loved her family and friends. She took great pride in the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. Holiday time was a special time for her because she enjoyed traveling to her daughter’s home, spending time with her grandchildren and sight seeing in the various cities in which they lived. She attended all of the graduations of her grandchildren. She was always excited about going to a family event and the chance to “cutup”, tell jokes and make the event memorable.She was fun loving and enjoyed having a good time. She had a humorous personality and when around you, she wanted to make you laugh. Alberta enjoyed attending the Almost Family Adult Daycare Center and enjoyed many of its activities. She loved making yarn dolls, participating in shopping trips and delightedin winning a fashion show and hat contest. She made friends wherever she went and will be sincerely missed by those who knew her.Alberta attended Ray of Hope Baptist Church and enjoyed the Christian friendship of the pastor, Rev. Dr. Charles M. Franklin, Sr., and his wife, Mrs. Daisy Franklin. She appreciated the members who called and sent cards during her illness.Alberta was predeceased by her son, Darnell, her sister, Bernice Neal and brother, Roy W. Cragway, Sr. She leaves to mourn: two daughters, Deborah Brown (Milton I. Brown) of Pine Forge, Pennsylvania, Jerilyn Roberts (Vernell Raymond Roberts, Jr.) of Hanover, Maryland; sons, Race C. Jones, Jr., of Oakland, California, and Clarence Bias, of Glen Burnie, Maryland; a sister, Rose Adams; nine grandchildren, Dr. Milton L. Brown, Race C. Jones, III, Lisa Hopkins, Pamela L. Brown, Michelle M. Brown, Janine A. Roberts, Kari J. Roberts, Ryan Foster and Courtney Bias; five great grandchildren, a niece and four nephews, two great nieces, three great nephews, one aunt, Delia Megginson; one uncle, Jack Cragway; six sisters-in-law, one granddaughter-in-law, and a host of relatives and friends. One of her closest friends was her sister-in-law, Wilhelmina Cragway.
