Addie P. Stewart

Addie Pauline Stewart was born to Adele Pauline Howard and David Alvin Howard on January 18, 1932 in Baltimore, Maryland. She grew up, the middle of three girls. She was very close to her elder sister, Dimples, who preceded her in death, and her baby sister, Dottie, who still resides in Baltimore.Addie was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. She grew up under the spiritual eye of her grandmother, Pauline Ireland, whom everyone called “Mama.” Mama saw to it that Addie and her sisters went to church. Addie was baptized at King’s Apostolic Holiness Church, and she was trained in the ways of the Lord. She loved the Lord, and she also shared her love with, and her concern for, everyone.Addie worked on various jobs. Her favorites were working for H&R Block, doing income tax returns, and working for the City of Baltimore at the Mayor’s office. She had such hobbies as cooking, dancing, playing bingo, playing cards, and entertaining guest. She was an avid reader. She loved talking to people and discussing current events. Addie was always up front with people. She had a great sense of fair play and justice. She didn’t care who you were; if you were wrong, you were wrong; and she’d let you know. By the same token, when you were right, she’d let you know. Her great love for people was always manifested in the way she treated them.Addie met and later married Louis William Stewart on July 20, 1960. Her daughter, Valerie Hester and his daughter, Shelly Johnson, were brought into their marriage. Theirs was a good marriage. They had their peaks and valleys, but no one could deny that they were in love with each other. They later renewed their vows on January 26, 1985. After 30 years of marriage, Louis passed away on October 24, 1990.Addie loved her family, which grew into grandchildren, great grandchildren and a great great-grandchild. Addie went into eternity on August 17, 2004 after a lengthy illness. She did not burden her family with complaints. She kept her cheerful disposition and sweet smile until the end. She was a special lady who will be missed by all who knew her.She leaves to cherish her memories: her daughter, Valerie Hester, and her step-daughter, Shelly Johnson and one son-in-law, Clarence; three grandchildren, Louis, Christine and Pam; a sister, Darcenda Williams; a brother-in-law, Lee Williams; six great grandchildren, Lakeisha, Octavia, Takiera, Louis Jr., Adriel, Jahlil and Justice; a great great-grandchild, Anise Coley; five nieces, four nephews, twelve great nieces, nine great nephews, thirty-eight great great-nieces and nephews, four great great great nieces, and a host of cousins and other relatives and friends.
