Tommy Tyson Sr.

Trustee Tommy Lee Tyson, Sr. was born on January 29, 1950, in Thomasville, North Carolina to the late Kay Tee Tyson, Sr. and Bernice Tyson and was the third oldest of six siblings. He was the devoted husband to Delores Marie Tyson. Tommy was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System and graduated from Frederick Douglass High School in 1968. He later received an Associate’s Degree from the Community College of Baltimore. On February 19, 1972, he married the love of his life, Delores Marie Barr, in the middle of a blizzard. From this union were born two children, “Rici” and “Buster”. Tommy was honorably discharged from the US Army after three years of service during the Vietnam War. After the army, Tommy briefly worked for the Veterans Administration and then completed his career at the United States Postal Service. After 37 years as a letter carrier, he retired in 2009. Tommy received multiple awards while at the Post Office, including ones for a million miles of Safe Driving and Outstanding Service. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and a union delegate for many years, even after retirement. He joined Mt. Olive Freewill Baptist Church in 1970 under the leadership of Bishop Leo K. Caesar, where he served on the Usher Board with his lifelong friends Aaron Williams and Tommy Johnson. In September 1977, Trustee Tyson joined Dalton Baptist Church under the leadership of Bishop Aggie L. Brown, Sr., where he served on the Trustee Board and was also a member of the Male Chorus. Most recently, Trustee Tyson was the Trustees’ Co-Chair of the Great Dalton Baptist Church led by Bishop Willie J. Barr, Jr., Ph.D. Tommy enjoyed traveling and attending family gatherings. He was the Treasurer of the Eaddy Barr Family Reunion for over 32 years. Tommy was also a member of the Tyson Family Reunion Committee and never missed one year of its gatherings since 1992. Tommy was a true friend that could always be counted on because of his honesty and loyalty. He was affectionately called “Uncle Tommy” by not only his nieces and nephews but by all of the children in the neighborhood and at church. You could always count on words of wisdom or a word of encouragement from him. Most of all, he was a dedicated husband, a loving father, and a caring grandfather. Tommy Tyson was preceded in death by his father, Kay Tee Tyson, Sr.; his mother, Bernice Tyson; and his brothers, Gene Ashcraft and Kay Tee “Shot Gun” Tyson, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife, Delores Marie Tyson; two children, Cherice (Omari) Daniel and Tommy (Tekesha) Tyson, Jr.; five grandchildren, Faith Tyson, Javon Daniel, Deven Daniel, Endiya Tyson, and Malik Tyson; one brother, Tyler (Pat) Tyson; two sisters, Delores (Genesis) Gale and Bertina (Ronald) High; two brothers-in-law, Nathaniel (Mamie) Barr, Jr. andTimothy (June) Barr; one sister-in-law, Debora Ashcraft; four God-daughters, Dana Moody, Shawndra Williams, Danielle Tapp, and Aaryn Anderson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
