Marybelle Chew

MARYBELLE CHEW, daughter of the late Zarra and Leava Davis, was born on July 23, 1922 in Charlotte, North Carolina. Marybelle had a brother, Zarra Lee Davis, who married Elaine Davis. Both of them preceded her in death. Her parents relocated to Baltimore, Maryland when she was a young girl. At the age of seventeen, Marybelle married the late Elder William A. Chew, and out of this union four children were born: Marion, Sandra (deceased), Joyce and Larry. She later gave birth to three other children: Clarence, Patricia and Ingrid, fathered by the late Albert E. Matthews. Marybelle received her education in the Baltimore City Public School System. She was employed for many years by the Virginia Peanut Company. Marybelle spent the majority of her work career employed as a food service worker in Baltimore's schools, from which she eventually retired. “Maebelle” or “Chew”, as she was affectionately known, accepted Christ when she was an adult. She was a faithful member of Greater Harvest Baptist Church for many years. She transferred her membership to Christ Church when her son-in-law, Milton A. Harrell, became the pastor. When Pastor Harrell retired, Mother Chew became a member of Victorious Ministries International, under Pastor Tony Smith, when the congregations merged. Marybelle was a fun-loving person. She was a member of a traveling social club called “The Friendly Ten.” She loved to travel, read, play games and watch mystery shows on TV. Mama Chew was meticulous about the appearance of her home. Dirt was her enemy! On June 20, 2013, Marybelle heard the master's call and swiftly went home to glory. She leaves to cherish her fond memories: five children, Marion Hutchins (Howard), Joyce Poole (Joseph), Larry Chew, Patricia Anderson and Ingrid Coby (James); son-in-law, Pastor Milton A. Harrell; daughter-in-law, Woodra Harrell; fourteen grandchildren (two deceased); seventeen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. She is fondly remembered by: two cousins, Atlean Bryant of Baltimore, MD and Willie Lee Starr of Charlotte, NC; and a host of other relatives and friends.
