Lucille Harris Thompson

Lucille ‘Cille’ Thompson was born on February 1, 1917, in Littleton, NC. She was the younger of two daughters born to Samuel and Annie Blackwell Harris. At a young age, Lucille moved with her family to Baltimore, MD, where she received her education. At the age of 16, she met and fell in love with Joseph Jackson Thompson, Sr. They married and from this union, six children were born, four boys and two girls. Her oldest sons, Norman and Thomas preceded her in death, as did her husband.In 1965, Lucille became a single and custodial parent of her youngest three children. Lucille was a determined and hard working parent. At times she worked two jobs to provide for her children. Her final employment was at the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene, where she was employed in the university. Dr. Helen Abby, a statistician at the university and her four-legged companion “Peppe”, took special interest in Lucille, as she did in them. Peppe looked forward to the daily treats Lucille would bring him. Lucille was stylish dresser who always kept her hair beautifully groomed. She had many friends and admirers. Lucille was a member of Memorial Baptist Church, located on Caroline and Preston Streets in Baltimore, MD, where she was baptized. She was a devoted member for many years until she moved to Louisville, KY, to reside with her oldest, daughter, Brenda, who lovingly cared for her. After a series of severe strokes, Lucille was admitted to a nursing home in Kentucky in May 2004.Despite the stokes, Lucille remained a cheerful person, smiling at anyone who called her name or crossed her path. On March 8, 2005, Lucille crossed over into eternity. She decided she needed a change of scenery and accepted a position offered her as a laborer in the Kingdom of God. What a fine worker she’ll be!She leaves to treasure her memory: sons, Joseph J. Thompson, Jr. (his companion Gloria Brown) and Leonard H. Thompson (Peggy), both of Baltimore MD; daughters, Brenda T. Henderson (Robert) Louisville, KY) and Patricia L. Thompson (Baltimore, MD); daughter-in-law, Mary R. Thompson (Baltimore, MD); 14 grandchildren, Anthony Thompson, Sharon T. Palmer (Mack), Leon Thompson (Machelle), Michael Thompson (Volley), Carol Mc Cray (Benjamin), Joan Thompson, Lynn Thompson, Brenda Thompson, Kelly T. Brooks (Dante), Kori Thompson, Maya H. Brown (Ulysses), Joseph K. Henderson, Ebony M. Thompson and Brandon R. Thompson; two sisters-in-law, Rev. Ida E.T. Simms and Helen G. Thompson; niece Shirley H. Dreher and her daughter, Fentrice Hawkins, 17 great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
