Leana Hargrave

Leana Hargrave, daughter of the late G.W. Richey and Lena Richey, was born on November 26, 1909 in Greenville, South Carolina. On February 21, 2012, after her long earthly journey, God ushered her in to her heavenly home and said “Well done my good and faithful servant” Leana Hargrave (nee:Richey) was married to the late Mose Adam Hargrave. From this union six children were born: Mary, Ruby (deceased), Yvonne, Sonia (deceased), Richard and Martin. Although her formal education was limited, her Christian education was immeasurable. Leana was truly one of God’s servants whose steps were ordered by the Lord. Her lifetime commitment was that she and her family would serve the Lord. She was a faithful member of Wayside Baptist Church in Baltimore, Maryland which served as the cornerstone for her lifetime commitment to serve God. Leana gave words of wisdom and encouragement, always reminding people that “God will make a way”. She was a devoted Christian, mother, neighbor, friend, and most importantly, a virtuous woman and helpmate to her husband Mose. In addition to caring for her family, she worked part-time as a salesperson for Fuller Brush Company, Avon Products and in the house keeping department at Maryland Casualty Company. She also worked as a domestic in the homes of prominent Jewish families in the upper Pak Heights area of Baltimore, Maryland. She lovingly accomplished her duties with dignity and pride, using integrity and honesty as a format for her life. Indeed she was “The Help”, earning an impeccable work ethic as she helped provide for her family. In her spare time, she enjoyed listing to God’s spoken word, baking sweet potato pies, pineapple cakes and rolls. She also loved spoiling her grandchildren by traveling on the number two bus headed for Sears and Roebuck in search of the perfect birthday and Christmas present. Friends, family and neighbors remember her for her kindness and generosity. She and her husband, who were proud homeowners, were known to open their hearts and home to those in need. Never boasting about deeds, she simply saw her kindness as doing God’s work. In her own right, she was truly a Griot, sharing proud memories of her African American and Native American history and culture through song and dance. She was the love and joy of so many lives. She taught us how to love and how to live. We are eternally grateful that she was a part of our lives. We give praises to God and thank Him for our precious memories. Mourning her physical departure, but rejoicing in her life, Leana leaves to cherish in her memory: daughters, Mary and Yvonne; sons, Richard and Martin; daughters-in-law and son-in-law, Eva, Felica and Gilbert; nineteen grandchildren, thirty great-grandchildren; twelve great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives; and her spiritual family at Wayside Baptist Church. She also leaves to cherish in her memory: her loving friend and roommate, Carlene Cashman; the devoted staff and many friends at Frederick Villa Nursing Home.
