Jerome Thomas White

Jerome Thomas White, son of the late Harry and Mary Ann White was born on July 28, 1933, at home in Baltimore, Maryland. He was adored and spoiled by his siblings as he was the eighth and last child born into the family. He departed this life after a brief illness Friday evening on February 24, 2023, to begin his new life in God’s Heavenly home. Affectionately, known as Rome by his siblings, Uncle Jerome received his education and graduated from the Baltimore City public school system. While in high school he was employed by Linda Lynn, an exclusive department store in downtown Baltimore. His mother insisted he have an after-school job and started as a part-time custodial employee. While employed at Linda Lynn he became a window dresser, was entrusted with making bank deliveries and received the keys to open/close the store. Uncle Jerome was an exemplary employee with over forty years of service and was considered a family member of the owners of the store. After the closing of Linda Lynn, he became a driver for Leonard Furrier for over 15 years making deliveries throughout Maryland and surrounding states. Uncle Jerome always resided with one of his siblings. After the family moved from Monroe Street he resided with his sister, Bertha to assist in the care of their eldest sister, Marceline. Aunt Bert & Uncle Jerome resided on Burleith Avenue until their health declined. If you were to look up the word BROTHER or UNCLE in the dictionary, you would see a brief definition of his character. However, the dictionary could never put into words the numerous acts of kindness Uncle Jerome provided to his family. He never married but when I think about his life, he was married to his family. Uncle Jerome never hesitated to do whatever was needed. Chauffeuring his siblings, other family members, and neighbors to appointments kept him so busy that he had everyone’s appointments on his personal calendar. The word “in law” didn’t exist in his vocabulary as his love for his family was not segregated nor was it unwavering. He was also well known for his many acts of kindness to his neighbors on Monroe Street and Burleith Avenue. Uncle Jerome loved to listen to jazz music and was a phenomenal self-taught photographer. He introduced his nephew, Wenzell to the world of photography. Uncle Jerome kept Lisa dressed in the latest styles from Linda Lynn. He enjoyed playing video games with his nephew, Bryan as well as spending quality time with other nieces and nephews. Uncle Jerome was also well known for his culinary skills. He enjoyed baking and decorating cakes for family gatherings. He would bake so many cakes, pies and rolls that we had to set up a separate table just to hold all the delicious desserts. But you better not cut one of his cakes – don’t’ chop up his cake! He had a special knife that he used and taught Mary Ann the art of cake slicing. Each slice had to be a perfect wedge. During the Christmas holiday while on Monroe Street, he set up an elaborate train set in his living room complete with all the bells and whistles. He also loved his dogs, Ceasar the German Sheppard and Kojak, the Doberman Pinscher. Uncle Jerome was not a regular attendee of church but was a Believer & he lived a Christian life. I would describe him as a “Do-er of the Word” loving unconditionally his family, neighbors, and friends. Uncle Jerome was a true BROTHER, UNCLE and FRIEND in every sense of the word. We were truly Blessed to have had so many days to be in his company and to return the love he so freely gave. Uncle Jerome departed this life to be reunited with his parents Harry and Mary Ann Wesley White, siblings Thomas Wesley, Marceline Sitney, Laura White, Harry White, Mary Belle Carter, Joseph White, and Bertha White-May. He is survived by his devoted nephews/nieces, Dr. Wenzell E. Carter (Marjorie), Lisa White, Mary Ann Carter, Russell May (Beverly), Craig White, Bryan White (Teressa), Wanda White, devoted cousin Keith Pennick, sister-in-law Emogene White along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends leaving a legacy of LOVE for FAMILY.
