James T. Davenport

James T. Davenport, only son of Missouri Barton was born on March 5th, 1943. He was raised by Missouri and her husband Boyce Barton in Baltimore, Maryland. He was educated in Baltimore City Public Schools and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1961. He received a B.S. in Physics from Morgan State University and went on to receive an M.A. degree in Spiritual and Pastoral Care at Loyola University. James was an officer in the United States Army from 1966 to 1969 and was a Vietnam Veteran, serving his country and garnering several commendations until 1969, when he was honorably discharged. Jim and Frances met at Morgan State University in 1966 where they quickly captured each other’s interest. He tutored her in Physics. They enjoyed taking day trips, sharing poetry, music and lively conversations about everything under the sun. James was full of surprises and had quite an adventurous nature. Upon returning from Vietnam, James and Frances were married May 10th, 1969. They went on to raise a son and daughter, Gary and Michelle. Jim loved his family; family vacations, family reunions and family cookouts. He would often take his granddaughters for snacks and snowballs on the weekends. He often described himself as living on an “estrogen farm” surrounded by so many women. God, family and community were tenets in Jim’s life and relationships. He utilized his business acumen to help further the Kingdom and the community. As owner of American Technology Corporation for almost forty years, he employed hundreds of Baltimore residents. He was a man who believed everyone deserved a chance. Jim was a man of principle but was willing to extend grace and help where he recognized a need. Providing help to those who needed it most was what spoke to him loudest and he was committed to The Door, a non profit dedicated to providing help to children and their families in North East Baltimore for years, always giving with his time and resources. He utilized his business success to fund the causes he cared about most and was a “humble giver” and more often than not, wanted complete anonymity. He placed great importance on his relationships with both God and the church. He became a member of New Shiloh Baptist Church in the early seventies, and then First Baptist Church of Pimlico March 1st, 1991. At First Baptist Church of Pimlico, he enjoyed serving on the Scholarship Board, the Benevolent Fund and the Building Committee. He shared a very special relationship the former Pastor Anthony and enjoyed working with current leadership at the church James leaves to cherish his memory: loving wife, Frances, his children, Gary (spouse Brandi) and Michelle, and his 5 granddaughters who he often called the “light of his life”, Breyonna, Britney, Jannah, Minah, and Lailah. He leaves a host of relatives, friends and church family to rejoice in his homegoing and will be dearly missed.
