Haywood Musgrove, Jr.

HAYWOOD MUSGROVE JR. was the first of six children, born to the late Haywood & Esther Musgrove Sr. on June 6, 1928, in Baltimore, Maryland. Haywood attended Dunbar High then transferred to Carver Vocational High where he concentrated in carpentry and house construction. While in high school he gave his life to Christ at the Israel Baptist Church in 1943. He gained his wings on December 11, 2023, after a lengthy illness. In 1947, a year after graduating high school with high honors, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served as a sergeant. While in the army he enrolled in various trades including Electrical Engineering, Carpentry, and Heavy Construction, he was also enrolled in the NCO Academy. During his time in the service, he traveled to many places including Germany, and Russia, and was honorably discharged in 1957. After his time in the service, he began his career as a firefighter. During his career Haywood would face many obstacles, including falling through the roof of a duplex into the basement, which landed him in the hospital for four days. While in the hospital he gained media attention. He would often say to many that being a firefighter was one of his greatest achievements in life, next to being a loving husband and devoted girl dad. In 1961 he met the woman that would become the love of his life Mable Horne. A year later June 9, 1962, they joined in holy matrimony. Out of this union three daughters were born, Jacqueline Crews, Djuna Nicholson, and Nicole Mcelveen. Haywood loved and cherished his wife and children; they were the forefront of his life. After retirement from the fire station 1984 Haywood enjoyed many activities including small home renovations, looking after his grandchildren, and most of all getting around by foot. He enjoyed walking, he would walk to the store, laundromat, to get his haircut, and to the post office. Haywood enjoyed doing anything for his wife, children, and grandchildren. He leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Mable Musgrove; three daughters, Jacqueline Crews, Djuna Nicholson, and Nicole Mcelveen; three grandchildren, Brittany R. Thomas, Bennie R. Thomas III and Justyn Michael Nicholson (preceded in death); five siblings, Ellsworth Musgrove (preceded in death), Lillian Musgrove (preceded in death), Esther Musgrove, James Musgrove (preceded in death), and Betty Musgrove; a devoted niece, that was like a daughter, Lena (Bernadette) Horne; and a whole host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
