Ernest Moses Dowdy Jr.

Ernest Moses dowdy, Jr. fought a good fight, kept the faith, and would not let pain or suffering separate him from the love of God. He departed this life on April 24, 2012 at St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Ernest was born on September 27, 1937 to the late Moses and Pollie Taylor Dowdy. The union was blessed with nine children of whom Ernst was the oldest! He joined the Springfield Baptist Church in Meherrin, Virginia at an early age and remained a faithful member until he moved to Baltimore, Maryland. Ernest attended Lunenburg High School in Victoria, Virginia. He graduated in June of 1957. After graduation he moved to Baltimore, Maryland where he got a job in Sparrows Point. He was inducted into the Army on July 5, 1961. As a young soldier, Ernest served his country well. He was a (rifle) Marksman and a “Cook.” He received an Honorable Discharge from the Army of the United States on June 30, 1967. When he came home on leave from the military to visit his family, he cooked rolls for the family dinner, which everyone loved. He also loved for his sisters to fix him some country Kool-Aid to drink; pork fatback to eat and he loved fast cars, which he shined day after day. After his military service he worked at Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Maryland until he retired. Ernest was joined in Holy Matrimony to Melvina Jackson on January 22, 1977. To this union, Ernestine (Tina) was born. Other children that are a part of this union are: Linda Barrow, Teresa Brock and Russell Brock (Barbara). He was preceded in death by: his father, Moses Ernest Dowdy; mother, Pollie G. Taylor Dowdy; sister, Ruby D. Williams; and brothers-in-law, Melvin Jackson, Sr. and Ralph Hunt, Sr. He leaves to cherish his precious memory: his loving and devoted wife, Melvina Jackson Dowdy (Jean) of Baltimore, MD; his children, Ernestine Denise D. Nixon (Rodney/ Hannah), Linda Barrow, Teresa Brock and Russell Brock all of Baltimore, MD; four sisters, Mable Lorene D. Jackson (Melvin-deceased), Polly D. Hunt (Ralph-deceased), Trustee Irma D. Robertson (Paul) and Minister M. Patricia D. Anderson (Rev. Harold) all of Meherrin, VA; three brothers, Reverend Dr. Raymond E. Dowdy (Dr. Osa) of Farmville, VA, Lt. Colonel Carlton Lee Dowdy (Kathy) of California and Leon Morris Dowdy (Ivy) of Richmond, VA; two aunts, Mrs. Ruth Taylor of Farmville, VA and Mrs. Christine Dowdy (91 years old) of Philadelphia, PA; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Elaine Poole and Mrs. Andrea Forrester; two brothers-in-law, Mr. Wilbur Forrester and Mr. Alfonso Spady (Maria) of Baltimore, MD; His best and dearest friends who stood by his side through thick and thin, Mr. Pete Mullins and Mr. Wilbur Forrester of Baltimore, Md. He was also blessed with several beautiful grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
