Darnell E. Bates

DARNELL EUGENE BATES was born on February 10, 1946 to the late Dorothy (Dot) Bates. He was called to eternal rest on January 10, 2019. He attended Baltimore City Public Schools and acquired a certificate in cooking at a local trade school. Darnell loved to cook and worked at various cafeterias and companies assisting his mother in serving at special parties. Darnell and Dot were a perfect example of a loving Son to Mother relationship. As a youth, he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and was baptized at Calvary Baptist Church on Biddle Street. God blessed him with a melodious tenor voice and he sang on various choirs. In addition, Darnell also enjoyed singing at talent shows in the community and on street corners. He was an excellent dancer and kept up with all of the latest dances. Also, he enjoyed shopping and wearing stylish clothes especially sweaters. For many years, when his mother’s health began to fail, Darnell was his mother’s Primary Care Giver and was dedicated to caring for her until her death. During his journey of life, he faced many health challenges which he learned to manage. He trusted God to raise him up from his illnesses. Many times the doctors were amazed as to how he persevered and overcame various obstacles. Thru It All God kept him and sustained him. He never gave up. His favorite words, to his cousin Barbara, “I am ok”. “Stop worrying about me and take care of yourself.” Darnell resided in the Monte Verde Apartments on Violet Ave for many years. In the last five years, he lived at the Belvedere Green Apartments. He loved to socialize with his neighbors, attended Bible Study, played cards, and bingo. On Sundays, he visited a local nursing home to see his 98 year old Aunt Agnes. There, he enjoyed brunch and was a soloist at the church services. Darnell had a great relationship with the elderly, and made a point to call and check regularly on his Aunt Allene. Darnell leaves to cherish his memories: 2 aunts, Agnes Bellamy and Allene Carter; cousins, Barbara Cooper, Sheila Matthews, Elwood, Patricia and Damion Toliver, Sheranda Cooper-Dildy, Marvin Harris, and a host of other cousins, relatives and friends. Also, a devoted and caring team at DeVita Dialysis/Medstar Union Memorial, Meals on Wheels, and residents and staff at Belvedere Green Apartments. Lovingly Submitted The Family
