Bertha Newborn

Praise God from whom all blessings flow for the life of BERTHA NEWBORN, born August 23, 2005 to the late Toby Harris and Fannie Bosley in Pitt County, North Carolina. She was nurtured in a Christian home, where faith, prayer, and love were part of her daily life. She gave her life to God at and early age. On June 22, 2005, God, in His divine wisdom, called Mother Bertha, or Momma as she was affectionately called, had three sisters and two brothers, all whom preceded her in death.While living in North Carolina, she met and married the love of her life, Hubert Newborn, in 1928. They moved to Baltimore in 1929. From this union, they were blessed with six children: Wren, Pansel, Herbert and Delores (Henry and Hubert Earl preceded her in death). She was a devoted and loving housewife until Hubert’s death in 1973. She continued to be a loving, dedicated homemaker, caring for her family. She could always be depended upon to reach out to those in needs, and often bringing them into her home to feed and care for them. Even after her health began to fail, she continued helping others. God had given her a gift working with the sick and the shut-in. Mother Bertha joined Apostolic Faith Church thirty years ago. She was so happy when she was accepted by the Missionary Board and was a “Mother of the Church.” She was also a member of the Eastern Star. She had a great love of hats, and people couldn’t wait to see the “Hat Lady” and the many different hats she wore. She was known for being a virtuous woman: very proud and sophisticated always with a smile. She enjoyed the trips Herbert took her on around the United States and Canada.In 2003, she became bed-ridden. During her illness, she was with her children. Herbert converted his car into and ambulance so he could transport her to visit family and friends Pansel, knowing she loved flowers, was always renewing her flowers. She traveled life on a glory road. It began by signing her name on Apostolic Faith Church’s roll; it shall end by hearing her name read out of the book of Life before God’s great white throne. It began by taking the hand of a preacher; it shall end by having a hand once pierced by a nail take hold of hers. We thank God for the 98 years He gave her.She was the matriarch of six generations. She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Wren Lock of Greenville, NC and Herbert Newborn of Millersville, MD; two daughters Pansel Carmon and Delores Best of Baltimore; nineteen grandchildren; forty-four great grandchildren; forty-four great-great grandchildren; two nieces, Agnes Redding and Mae Gloria; one nephew, Carrie (Kay) Flemming; godchildren, Clifton Payton, Lucille Edges, and Jean Scoot; adopted friends and neighbors, Lillie, Loretta, Lorraine, Annette and Gloria, who looked after her; friend of over 65 years, Sis. Helen Whitaker; and a host of other family and relatives.
