Anna Johnson

ANNA MAE JOHNSON (Ann, Mae or Mae Mae the names the family called her), the daughter of the late Elmer and Ethel Carroll, was born March 22, 1924 in Baltimore, Maryland. After a lengthy illness in which she fought a good fight, on February 27, 2014 God called her to eternal rest. Ann married William Graves in 1942 and out of this union two sons, Ronald Carroll and Charles Graves, were born. They were raised together with their sister Gwen. Later in life she met and married the love of her life Noble Johnson who preceded her in death in 1978. Ann was educated in the Baltimore City Public School System. She inherited a strong work ethic and she worked several jobs before being employed at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After 37 years of exemplary service in the Custodian Department she retired. Mae loved the Lord and on any given day you would find her at the dining room table reading her Bible, the Daily Bread or one of her many religious books she read. She loved her family and friends and it showed through her generosity, kindness and unselfishness toward each of us. Her love has forever impacted all of our lives. Mae was a devoted daughter and became even more so when her mother Ethel became sick. She became her caregiver until it became difficult to keep her home. After her mother's passing, Mae's health became a challenge to her. Her son Ronald and her daughter-in-law Cassandra moved her into their home and along with her son Charles became her caregivers. They made sure she made her appointments and were trained on how to perform the procedures for her care. There was never a time when we went to her for something no matter what, she would never refuse us. Another thing you could count on was the gathering at Mae's every Sunday for dinner and fellowship. Rain or shine every Sunday you could always expect some good fried chicken, greens and real potatoes along with whatever else that she had for dinner that Sunday. Everyone was made welcome whether you were family, friend or friend of a friend or somebody just dropping by. The grand finale of Sunday evening was everybody scrambling to get their baggie and filling it up with goodies from the server that was always filled with candy, cookies and fruit to take home for the week. Those days are truly missed. Ann had one brother, Herbert Carroll, who preceded her in death. Those left to cherish the life of Anna are: two devoted sons, Ronald (Cassandra) and Charles (Vernetta); daughter, Gwen (husband); four grandchildren, Dornee (Melvin), Ethan, Lisa (Travis) and Corey; eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, one niece; four devoted godchildren, Deborah (Ervin), Ellavinia (Dentis), Clarence (Sharon), Lavern (Eddie); two devoted cousins, Shirley, Gwen (Tally); a devoted former daughter-in-law, Clara Carroll; a special friend, Anna Getty; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
